IT Specialist

General Summary/Purpose:

The Department of Epidemiology, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health seeks an IT Specialist to work as an integral part of a data analysis center study team. The IT Specialist will collaborate with biostatisticians, epidemiologists, and investigators to manage and analyze complex multi-center longitudinal data. The successful applicant will contribute to the data management, data harmonization and data analysis to advance the scientific goals of a national child’s health study (https://echochildren.org/).

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

TheIT Specialist will work closely with other research team members to support the conduct of the research. The individual will help manage, analyze, and report on research data stored in SQL tables and other formats. The individual must be proactive, resourceful, self-directed, highly organized, and able to work independently and efficiently.

The duties of the IT Specialistinclude the following:

  • Data management including data checking and cleaning of data.
  • Oversee and perform constructions of datasets, variables and data cleaning.
  • Merge data, create data dictionaries, and recode variables to prepare data for analyses.
  • Make suggestions or provide solutions to problems related to data management and statistical analysis.
  • Develop, maintain, new or existing programs in accordance with programming standards and validation procedures,
  • Create and maintain technical and non-technical documentation, including data dictionaries and changes to data management systems.
  • Assist in the detection of problems in research instruments, data collection, and data entry and make suggestions or provide solutions through written or verbal reports .
  • Present and summarize analyses in various formats including raw output, tables, and graphics, oral and written reports.
  • Produce tables and graphs in publication-quality format and present results to senior investigators.
  • Perform statistical calculations and assists with preparation of progress reports, scientific abstracts and papers for publication.
  • Prepare preliminary and interim analyses reports regarding the status of the database and analytical activities.
  • Serves as a program reviewer and quality control checkpoint person for analyses.
  • Attend weekly scientific meetings and other meetings with investigators.

Minimum Qualifications:

    High School Diploma/GED, 2 years related experience. Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. Prior experience with relational database management systems (RDBMS), including MySQL Strong programming and technical documentation skills. Understanding of data security issues. Critical thinking and analytical reasoning abilities. Keen attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple and competing priorities are a must.

Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits or 18 graduate degree credits = 1 year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college coursework may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred qualifications:

    Experience using SQL, REDCap strongly preferred Experience working in a research coordinating center environment Prior experience using Git to manage code changes and software upgrades

Technical qualifications or specialized certifications:

  • Demonstrated self-management
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Working knowledge and/or interest in public health and biomedical research
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Knowledge of SAS or R (proficiency with multiple statistical programs preferred).
  • Experience in database software helpful.
  • Knowledge of additional specialized software (e.g. SQL, Python) welcomed

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
