Assistant/Associate Scholar Historic Preservation Program (65265)



The college-wide Historic Preservation Program at the University of Florida is seeking a professional in digital imaging of architectural and cultural resources to direct the Envision Heritage initiative and Envision Lab. Launched in 2012, Envision Heritage is dedicated to exploring how new and emerging digital technologies can be employed to assist with heritage documentation, conservation, and interpretation. To date, much of the research and work of Envision Heritage has focused on terrestrial laser scanning and 3D photogrammetry. Envision Lab is dedicated to providing analysis and digital documentation of architectural materials, archaeological artifacts, and other physical cultural resources. Located in Governors House in St. Augustine, Envision Lab is part of the Preservation Institute St. Augustine mission to prepare the next generation of historic preservation specialists through applied (“hands-on”) learning and research while helping record, study, conserve, and interpret the historic City of St. Augustine.

The position of Assistant or Associate Scholar will support research, teaching, and service and serve as Director of Envision Heritage and Envision Lab. The individual will serve in a leadership role on funded research and sponsored projects involving digital imaging and coordinating materials analysis studies. The individual will work closely with the Director of Historic Preservation. The individual will also work closely with project sponsors, project partners, and other researchers to collect and analyze digital data, create products from digital data, and oversee the materials research undertaken at Envision Lab. The individual will need to have an understanding of historic preservation/cultural heritage conservation procedures and best practices and a technical skillset and understanding of digital imaging technologies and techniques, data management, data integrity, and materials conservation. As a Principal Investigator, the individual will actively seek funding sources for Envision Heritage and Envision Lab.

Job Responsibilities

  • Manage funded research and sponsored projects, including staff management, communication with project sponsors, fiscal management, and preparation of progress reports.
  • Collect, process, and work with digital data to support funded research project needs.
  • Develop workflows for delivery of products created through the use of digital technologies and other recording and analytical methods.
  • Seek and secure funding sources for Envision Heritage and Envision Lab.
  • Supervise graduate assistants and others contributing to grant and sponsored project research.
  • Oversee budgeting and finances.
  • Teach the Built Heritage Documentation I and II course sequence that incorporate digital technologies. Anticipated course load is one course per fall and spring semesters.
  • Dissemination of research through peer reviewed journal articles and publications and conference presentations.
  • Long-term strategic planning for Envision Heritage and Envision Lab.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. (preferred) or Master’s Degree in Historic Preservation, Architecture, Urban Planning, or another related field, from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience using digital imaging technologies like laser scanning.
  • Demonstrated experience working on grant funded research and sponsored projects.
  • Independent work ethic and willingness to learn new topics and skills.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
  • 5+ years’ experience with terrestrial laser scanning and other digital imaging techniques.
  • Demonstrated experience managing digital imaging projects for heritage sites.
  • Supervisory and/or personnel management experience.
  • Experience managing grants and sponsored project contracts.
  • Experience with fiscal and budget management.
  • Extensive experience with Windows Operating System and Microsoft Office Suite.
