JOB PURPOSE:

The Staff Attorney will manage a litigation docket that is commensurate with their experience and inline with the Animal Law Litigation Clinic's (ALLC) mandate and goals. The Staff Attorney will support the development of the
departmental website and additional outreach materials and will support fundraising efforts.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Litigation (70% of the time)
* Develop and litigate cases.
* Analyze the probable outcomes of cases, using knowledge of legal precedents.
* Advise clients.
* Interpret laws, rulings, and regulations.

Student Mentorship (20% of the time)
* Review and advise on ALLC student casework.
* Encourage and build mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among employees.
* Establish long-range objectives and specify the strategies and actions to achieve them.
* Build and work with diverse teams effectively.

Department Outreach (10% of the time)
* Develop expertise, relationships, and networks in areas of interest to the department.
* Support public outreach and fundraising efforts.

Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Doctorate or Juris Doctorate degree or a combination of education and relevant training/experience.

  • 1-2 years of relevant experience.

  • At least three years litigation experience.

  • Commitment to farmed animal protection.

  • Oregon State Bar Membership or eligibility

  • Knowledge of a variety of simple to moderately complex procedures and operations.

  • Ability to use judgment to apply procedures or to operate equipment.

  • Office Suite Software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.) - Intermediate ability with good working and background knowledge of all technical aspects of the position (practical application).Understand and can discuss the application and implications of changes to processes and procedures, with minimal guidance.

  • Travel required: 20%



PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 2-5 years of relevant experience.

  • Knowledge of standardized but moderately complex procedures and operations.

  • Experience handling discovery and trials.

  • Experience engaging with interns and students.

Eligibility to Work
