Faculty - Tenure Track - Astronomy

Summary:
The Utah Valley University (UVU) Physics Department (www.uvu.edu/physics) invites applications for a tenure-track position in astronomy or astrophysics beginning July 1, 2021. UVU is a large public undergraduate university with strong emphasis on teaching. The Department offers a bachelor's degree in physics. Applicants must show evidence of, or potential for, excellence in teaching astronomy and physics at the undergraduate level. Primary teaching responsibilities are in the area of astronomy, but the faculty member may from time to time have the opportunity to teach other undergraduate physics courses. Candidates with teaching and research experience in any field of astronomy or astrophysics will be considered, but preferential consideration will be given to those who can involve undergraduate students in their research, collaborate with current faculty in projects of mutual interest, or develop and teach online or hybrid courses. The teaching load at UVU is 12 credit hours per semester. UVU has an Office of Teaching and Learning, which provides numerous opportunities to support faculty in their efforts towards teaching excellence. The Physics Department currently has 14 full time faculty members with research interests in a wide range of fields in physics and astronomy.

UVU, located in Orem, Utah, is a comprehensive state institution of higher education with over 35,000 students. Orem is on the western front of the Wasatch Mountains, with superb opportunities for numerous outdoor activities including snow sports, hiking, mountain biking, etc. The Wasatch Front metropolitan area offers numerous cultural opportunities such as the Sundance film festival and world-class music and dance companies. The UVU campus is served by an excellent public transit system, including bus and rail lines that run along the entire Wasatch Front urban corridor. Required Qualifications:
A PhD in astronomy, astrophysics, physics, or a closely related field is required at the time of appointment.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
The new faculty member must possess:
• Good understanding of the fundamentals of astronomy, physics, mathematics, and computational methods at a level sufficient to teach introductory astronomy courses and one or two upper division courses such as astrophysics, optics, or relativity.
• Knowledge specific to a particular research discipline in astronomy or astrophysics sufficient to mentor undergraduate research to create new opportunities for students in that field of research.
• Ability to use educational “best practices” in teaching astronomy and other pedagogical methods, and the ability to explain complex principles at a variety of levels, depending on the audience.
• Social skills to communicate with and treat all students and university personnel with respect and professionalism.


Preferred Qualifications:
• Must show evidence of, or potential for, excellence in teaching introductory and upper-division astronomy classes at the undergraduate level.
• Proven success in a field of astronomy research with potential for collaboration with current UVU faculty.
• Additional preference will be given to those with experience developing and implementing online or hybrid courses.


Physical Requirements:
Work is normally performed in a typical classroom/office work environment.
