Counseling Services Director/Mental Health Care Professional - UM Crookston
This position reports directly to the Dean of Student Engagement & Wellness and is annually renewable, based on funding and performance. The Counselor & Counseling Center Director provides leadership and culturally responsive counseling, and crisis response, as well as providing consultation and programming on mental health issues to students and employees. The Counselor & Counseling Center Director provides direction and supervision for the unit. This position contributes to creating a vibrant campus community characterized by a strong commitment to equity, inclusion, and belonging for students with diverse identities including first-generation college students; students of various racial, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds; students from low-income families; students from rural communities; students with disabilities; LGBTQ students; and non-traditional adult learners.
● Bachelor’s degree with at least 2 years of experience of a combination of related education and work experience to equal six years; position involves patient care or work in support of patient care and related services.
● Professional health care certification, registration, or state licensure.
● Demonstrated self-awareness, cultural competence, and achievement in working with diverse student populations.
● Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
● Proven ability to work collaboratively with faculty, student affairs educators, and students.

● Master’s degree with professional state licensure in counseling, psychology, social work, or related field.

Functions and Duties:
Leadership & Administration
● Function as a thought leader, devising new and creative ways of promoting holistic mental health and wellness for students, especially as it related to promoting their success academically, personally, and professionally.
● Demonstrate self-awareness of one’s own cultural beliefs, perspectives, and privileges as a part of one’s orientation toward leadership and counseling.
● Acknowledge the specific and particular realities of communities of color, LGBTQ individuals, and other minoritized communities within Northwest Minnesota while also connecting communities to local and regional experiences in order to foster a greater sense of belonging.
● Generate mutual solidarity among historically underrepresented populations including but not limited to various racial and ethnic groups, first-generation college students, students from rural and agrarian communities, students from low-income families, LGBTQ students, students with disabilities, and religious minorities.
● Maintain a bias toward decision-making that is informed by research, data, and theory and that leverages students’ unique cultures, experiences, and backgrounds as strengths.
● Plan, implement, and manage the activities with the University Counseling Center.
● Hire, supervise, evaluate, and professionally develop staff counselors according to best practice guidelines and standards in the areas of clinical quality of care and productivity.
● Oversee overall departmental administration, organization of the work of the unit, and the budgetary and fiscal operations of Counseling Services. Establish priorities for providing care within the context of the resources established for Counseling Services and/or secure additional resources from external sources for expanded service.
● Serve on the University’s Crisis Intervention Teams such as the CARE Team, the Campus Bias Response Team, and Sexual Assault victim/survivors teams and workgroups.
● Chair the University Wellness Committee.
● Engage in CEU opportunities to maintain Minnesota licensure.
● Foster, provide, and facilitate educational and preventative programming to the campus community.
● Document and analyze policies, processes, and practices, especially in order to interrupt systemic privileging and/or marginalizing of various members of the campus community. Suggest improvements to current processes, practices, and communication efforts.
● Stay current on national, state, and local counseling public policy and related issues.
● Participate in University, campus, and department meetings as assigned.
● Work collaboratively with other units to address issues and develop strategies for awareness programs and resolution (e.g. Title IX).
● Perform related or similar duties as required or assigned.
● Remain current with best practices in higher education counseling and wellness.
● Provides culturally responsive counseling and therapy to members of the University community.
● Gather information to identify the recipient’s functioning level and need for services in all domains.
● Develop relationship and trust in order to support the client in achieving their goals, working within a brief therapy context and in order to facilitate strong referrals to longer-term providers when needed.
● Demonstrate self-awareness of one’s own cultural beliefs, perspectives, and privileges as a part of one’s orientation toward counseling and therapy.

● Provide community support in the event of a crisis.
● Maintain records related to the recipient’s status and functioning via Titanium.
● Contribute to assessment, program review, and other continuous improvement processes.
● Demonstrate leadership and professionalism through skills and dispositions related to active listening, de-escalation and conflict mediation, confidentiality, and ethical educational practice.
● Maintain client confidentiality, except where mandated by law.

Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug (ATOD) Coordinator
● Organize and/or conduct training and presentations to the University community on relevant counseling, mental health, drug, alcohol, tobacco and other drug related topics.
● Update and facilitate Alcohol Edu course for all new students.
● Provide consultation and technical services on drug and alcohol and mental health/counseling issues as needed or requested by students, faculty, student affairs educators, and other groups at the University and in the community.
● Serve as a liaison with Health Services, the Disability Resource Center, Residential Life and Education, and the Student Success Center, as well as to the University departments and units as assigned.
● Participate in ongoing training and outreach activities at the University and in the community, upon approval by supervisor.
● Maintain membership with relevant professional organizations.
● Participate in professional development activities through presentations, publications and attendance at conferences or related activities.
● Participate in University ATOD and mental health and counseling organizations.
● Provide educational awareness related to Title IX and Bystander training related to alcohol and other drugs.
