The University of Pennsylvania invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of Admissions. Reporting to the Provost and serving as primary admissions policy advisor to the President, the Dean of Admissions is responsible for all aspects of the undergraduate recruitment and selection process on behalf of Penn’s four undergraduate schools (Arts & Sciences, Engineering and Applied Science, Nursing, and Wharton) and is a highly visible advocate and spokesperson for Penn’s undergraduate programs.

America’s first university and a member of the Ivy League, the University of Pennsylvania was founded by Benjamin Franklin and is home to the nation’s first modern liberal arts curriculum, its first medical school (founded in 1765) and its first collegiate business school (founded in 1881). Today, Penn is ranked among the world’s leading universities with teaching, research, and patient care programs housed in 12 schools spanning the liberal arts and the professions. Penn’s admissions program is one of the nation’s most competitive, and the University’s admissions policies give strong emphasis to student achievement, diversity, and access. Financial need is not a barrier to a Penn education: undergraduate admissions decisions are made on a need-blind basis and all admitted undergraduates receive all-grant financial aid packages that meet their full demonstrated need. Since 2004, the University has awarded $2 billion in undergraduate aid to more than 22,000 students. Forty-six percent of undergraduate students received grant-based financial aid in 2018-19, with an average package of $54,301. Nearly half of Penn’s undergraduates self-identify as students of color, more than half are women, 13% are among the first in their families to attend college, and 13% are international.

The new Dean of Admissions will lead a team of 55 responsible for recruiting and enrolling diverse classes of extraordinarily talented and motivated students and will be expected to build on current strengths, enhance national and global visibility, and manage deftly and collaboratively the many complex imperatives so that all of the University’s goals are reflected in each incoming class. The new Dean will bring substantial leadership-level experience of national distinction and will possess superior communication abilities; outstanding leadership and managerial skills; the capacity to build collaborative relationships across the institution; and proactively will recognize and embrace opportunities for change. The new Dean will be committed to a rigorous, strategic approach to leading the office, and to the constant assessment and analysis that mark informed decision-making. Above all, the new Dean will be dedicated to Penn's values, its commitment to making an Ivy League education available to a highly diverse class of exceptional students, regardless of their economic circumstances, and to the spirit of creativity, innovation, and putting knowledge to work to better the world that defines today's Penn.
