ATTENTION:
The Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of
Education and Professional Studies at the University of
Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor in
the area of Literacy/Reading Education beginning August 2021 with
strong credentials in reading/literacy instruction. Specific
consideration will be given to candidates with skills in the
foundations of reading, writing, and critical literacies and with
proven commitments to preparing teachers of multilingual learners
and learners with a wide range of racialized and socioeconomic
backgrounds.
JOB DETAILS:
This is a full-time position with responsibilities for teaching
undergraduate and graduate courses in reading. The candidate will
also be expected to pursue an active research agenda that engages
undergraduate and graduate students, results in publications and
contributes to advancing the department, university, the
profession, and society. Scholarship should include a focus on
literacy and/or literacy instructions, including critical
literacies, biliteracy and multiliteracies, and/or disability
studies-informed approaches to reading and literacy.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ph.D. or other terminal degree in reading or a closely related field. (ABD candidates may apply but must have their degree completed by the contract start date in August 2021; if not, they will be hired on a one-year contract with the understanding that their degree will be completed before January 2022, in advance of their first scheduled review.)
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching with an emphasis on promoting the success of students and clear evidence of scholarly potential.
- Minimum of three years of K-12 teaching experience and an equivalent teaching and preparation background to qualify for Wisconsin reading teacher and reading specialist licenses.
Desired Qualifications:
- Demonstrated commitment to the preparation of teachers who use linguistically and culturally sustaining approaches
- Experience with teaching reading, advising, and supervision.
- Demonstrated skills of collaborating to work with cross-departmental teams
- Experience with online instruction and/or demonstrated commitment to teaching using effective online learning environments.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills.
- Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Additional responsibilities will include advising
undergraduate/graduate students, and supervision of pre-student
teaching, student teaching, and other field experiences. All
faculty at UW-Whitewater may be required to teach online and/or
hybrid classes, evening and/or weekend classes and provide service
to the university and the local community in a variety of
modalities, including mentoring students and providing professional
development for colleagues, schools, and community groups.
Experience working with diverse populations and a commitment to
work with non-traditional students are essential for this position.
The candidate will also be expected to participate in service
activities and show a commitment to principles of diversity and
inclusion as a member of the university community. Salary is
commensurate with academic preparation and experience.
DEPARTMENT INFORMATION:
The Curriculum and Instruction Department in the UW-Whitewater
College of Education & Professional Studies (COEPS) provides
students with the opportunity to prepare for careers as teachers.
Students may choose the Early Childhood Program, the
Elementary/Middle(MCEA) School Program or a Middle/Secondary School
Program. In each of the programs, students earn Department of
Public Instruction (DPI) licensure.
The Department of Curriculum and Instruction (C&I) houses
numerous teacher preparation programs along with programs for add
on licenses for certified teachers and the MSEPS (Master of Science
in Education and Professional Studies). We are proud of our
programs that lead to licensure either a first-time license or
add-on licenses. As they move through their coursework, students
combine a commitment to education with a strong liberal arts
foundation, a teaching major and the study of teaching. All
students engage in at least three school-based field experiences
that allow them to apply their knowledge to actual classroom
situations, preparing them to be effective teachers and
instructional leaders in our changing schools. The faculty and
staff recognize that graduates of our programs play a vital role in
the lives of children and families both in Wisconsin and around the
world.
