General Summary/Purpose

The department of Infectious Diseases is seeking a Clinical Nurse to provide STD/HIV/HCV/PrEP education, triage, instruction on medication, side effects management, medication adherence and STD/HIV prevention services to patients served at Baltimore City Health Department STD/HIV/HCV/TB clinics and mobile clinic. Limited wound care for people who inject drugs. Reports to the Nurse Supervisor.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

To provide STD/HIV/HCV/PrEP education, triage, instruction on medication, side effects management, medication adherence and STD/HIV prevention services to patients served at Baltimore City Health Department STD/HIV/HCV/TB clinics and mobile clinic. Limited wound care for people who inject drugs. Reports to the Nurse Supervisor.

  • Obtains sexual and behavioral risk history and records finding.
  • Obtains urine specimens and other specimens for laboratory testing of asymptomatic patients for STD screening, per training and written protocols.
  • Provides patient education on STD/HIV, test results, and counsels on HIV and STD risk reduction.
  • Gives antibiotic injections and vaccinations and other medications according to standing orders and the BCHD RN dispensing formulary.
  • Incorporate STD/HIV prevention into the care of each patient and include messages that emphasize the need for safe behaviors to protect patient's health and the health of their partners.
  • Place and read PPD as needed.
  • Triage of acute EII and STD patients, by phone or on site.
  • Ordering STD and EII lab work according to established guidelines and protocols.
  • PrEP/nPEP screening, initiation and adherence counseling.
  • Assist in ordering PrEP and nPEP for uninsured and insured patients.
  • Regular monitoring of adherence and tolerance to PrEP and nPEP.
  • Pharmacy monitoring of prescription completion by Pt.
  • Limited wound care for people who inject drugs.
  • Coordinate care with other team members including providers, peer navigators, social workers, and others.
  • Assist with clinic initiatives as necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Individual must be a registered nurse, licensed in the State of Maryland or state where practicing. Bachelor's degree in nursing or related discipline preferred. Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Acceptable completion of the JHH or BMC credentialing process is required within two weeks of start date.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of STD/HIV disease and STD/HIV/HCV/PrEP/nPEP treatment, and resources

Ability to work with culturally diverse patient, staff and community populations

Ability to work in multidisciplinary, multi-organizational team setting

Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and follow through

Proficiency in medical and conversational Spanish desired.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
