Job Summary/Basic Function

The Department of Biology welcomes applicants for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position with a specialization in human genetics, beginning August 2021. Experience with genome and bioinformatic analysis and/or statistical analysis is preferred. Responsibilities include teaching major and/or non-major courses (lectures and/or labs) in introductory biology, genetics & molecular biology, human genetics, and bioinformatics or biological statistics; advising students; scholarly work and establishing an active undergraduate research program in human genetics or related discipline; and department, university, and professional service. Actual assignments will depend upon department needs. TEACHING AND PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES :

We are a teaching intensive institution and are committed to community-based research, service learning, community engagement and distance education. Our small classes allow for close mentoring and collaborative research with undergraduates.

Effectively teach students both in assigned courses and outside-the-classroom settings (e.g., student research, service learning, field activities and placements, etc.), advise students, and carry out other assigned professional responsibilities in support of student learning and success. The academic-year workload for full-time faculty is 24 workload hours and faculty must hold a minimum of five office hours per week on no fewer than three different days. Primary teaching responsibility is in major and/or non-major courses (lectures and/or labs) in genetics and molecular biology, and introductory biology, as well as courses within his/her area of specialization. Establish an active research program in human genetics or related discipline that involves undergraduate students.

Candidates must be willing to teach day, evening and/or weekend classes and conduct classes on and off the Millersville campus through multifaceted teaching strategies for face-to-face classroom delivery and/or web-enhanced or web-based formats. All members of the faculty also have the responsibility to accept those reasonable duties assigned to them within their fields of competence. Actual assignments will depend upon department needs.

Faculty are expected, per the Collective Bargaining Agreement Article 4, to engage in professional responsibilities such as curriculum development and update; learning outcomes assessment for courses and programs; and participating in department, college, and university meetings and workshops.

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION :

The Department of Biology, in the College of Science and Technology, is comprised of 17 full-time faculty members, several part-time faculty positions, three support staff and approximately 700 majors. In addition to the B.S. Biology degree, the department offers programs in animal behavior, botany, ecology, marine biology, molecular biology/biotechnology, secondary education, respiratory therapy, medical technology, nuclear medicine technology, optometry, pre-podiatry, athletic training, and pre-medical professions. Laboratories are well equipped and the facilities are excellent. There is a natural area, and small and medium-sized ponds located on campus. In addition, Millersville University is a founding and active member of the Chincoteague Bay Field Station in Wallops Island, Virginia. Millersville University is a member of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.

Required Qualifications
  • ABD, with Ph.D. in Genetics or related discipline completed by the date of appointment.
  • Broad training in human genetics.
  • Research experience in human genetics.
  • Ability to establish a research program in human genetics or related field that involves undergraduate students.
  • Ability to teach major and/or non-major courses (lectures and/or labs) in introductory biology, genetics & molecular biology, human genetics, and bioinformatics or biological statistics.
  • Commitment to excellence in teaching and research at the undergraduate level.
  • Evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Successful interview, teaching demonstration, reference checks and 3 background clearances.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Post-doctoral research experience in human genetics.
  • Research experience with genome and bioinformatic analysis or biological statistics.
  • Post-secondary level teaching experience (documented by at least one letter of reference).
