Primary Function

Police Telecommunicator is a responsible professional position within the Department of Public Safety. Individuals working in this capacity provide support services to protect the safety and security of persons, property, equipment and facilities, and provide assistance to the public, officers, and agency managers. He or she provides support for public safety personnel enforcing Federal, State and local laws, rules, regulations and University policies and procedures. He or she receives, interprets and transmits information which supports the maintenance of public peace and order, facilitation the adjudication of University Judicial Code infractions and violations of State or Federal Criminal or Civil Statutes.

Duties and Responsibilities (generally)

The duties and responsibilities of a Telecommunicator include but are not limited to:

Receives and interprets incoming citizen and officer complaints, inquiries, and reports of emergency and non-emergency situations; logs, coordinates, disseminates and maintains records of messages; may initiate police reports of incidents; originates and disseminates information regarding safety and well-being of law enforcement officers and citizens.

Operates communications center equipment to receive and transmit emergency services and administrative information. Monitors and provides base station service for multiple police, fire, service and emergency frequencies.

Enters or retrieves information using the department computer, L.E.A.D.S., National Law Enforcement Telecommunications System or National Crime Information Center for the purpose of collecting, verifying or maintaining data, Interprets responses of the various data systems, recognizes malfunctions and assists in the corrections of problems with the systems, maintains files as required by Illinois State and Federal Statutes.

Monitors fire and intrusion alarms, the local weather warning system and dispatches information and appropriate personnel as necessary.

May provide training to telecommunicators, officers or interns.

Provides assistance and information to the public upon request.

Provides information, answers calls and dispatches personnel for the Huskie Safe Line.

May receive, secure, maintain records or return lost-and-found property

Accurately and completely documents information in the house computer system as trained or directed.

Assists with call-in procedures and notifications as trained or directed.

May perform additional duties associated with L.E.A.D.S., the alarm system, resources, training or 911.

Maintains knowledge by keeping up-to-date with all resources, daily bulletins, pass on information, establish procedures and protocols, and other information sources.

Answer phones and direct messages as necessary.

Controls access to the Public Safety Department and the Communications Center.

May disseminate confidential information to appropriate personnel under regulations established by the Department of Public Safety and the state and federal governments.

Assists parking with license information and keeps tow lists up to date.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Required Qualifications for this position

He or she must be able to type with accuracy and have the knowledge and skills to use advanced office machines and computer systems. He or she must maintain a calm demeanor and communicate effectively.

Physical Demands

Physical Requirements: This individual must be able to perform at exceptional cognitive levels. He or she must be able to assess a situation and make appropriate decisions. The person holding this position must have sufficient intellectual capacity to remain in control while working in stressful conditions. A Telecommunicator must not suffer any physical or mental condition that could impair his or her ability to perform the required duties and responsibilities of the position or that would compromise his or her safety or endanger another. He or she must be free from hearing, speech or vision deficits that are not correctable that could interfere with their ability to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position or jeopardize their safety or that of another. He or she may need to squat, bend or reach for short periods and lift up to 50 lbs.

Work Environment: This individual generally works in a climate-controlled environment. However, there may be occasions when he or she is required to work in uncomfortably warm or cool conditions. This person may be required to engage in shift-work or work an extended schedule. He or she may be required to sit at a desk in an office or classroom for up to twelve (12) hours within a day with limited ability to stretch or reposition themselves. There may be times when he or she has to work in surroundings that are loud and/or disruptive.
