Program Coordinator - Upward Bound Math Science

Position Details

Reporting to the Program Director of Upward Bound Math-Science, the Program Coordinator will work with Upward Bound Math-Science participants from Middletown, Meriden, and New Britain.

The Upward Bound Math-Science Program is a U.S Department of Education funded program through August 2022, and contingent upon renewal of grant funding thereafter.

The Program Coordinator will work in furthering pre-college access and program goals to assist eligible low-income, first-generation college bound high school students to succeed academically and to prepare for college.

Responsibilities include:

Develop, coordinate and implement programming to achieve standardized program objectives and meet student academic, social and personal needs.

Advise students, in individual and group settings, on college and career readiness.

Lead workshops and teach classes as necessary on academic, social, and personal skill building, including but not limited to college preparatory and senior seminar classes during the summer program.

Interview eligible students and their parents/guardians to ensure commitment to program.

Supervise and evaluate academic progress of participants.

Analyze participant data to identify areas in need of interventions and supports.

Plan and coordinate the marketing of program and its events through social media, email, and other applicable media.

Develop and maintain effective and productive relationships with participants and their parents/guardians.

Recruit, interview, train and supervise student tutor-mentors as necessary.

Train, mentor, and evaluate part-time employees including summer facilitators.

Assists Program Director in completing reporting to U.S Department of Education and community stakeholders.

Chaperone students during after-school tutoring, Saturday Sessions, field trips and special events.

Monitor alumni to gather college enrollment/completion and other relevant data. Advise as necessary.

Document interactions and services provided to students in line with department requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and at least two years’ experience working with educational programs in a school, community organization or higher education environment with students from disadvantaged backgrounds, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Proven knowledge about issues low-income and first-generation students face {in college access.

Proven knowledge of college and financial aid application process.

Demonstrated knowledge of using social media to promote program/events.

Familiarity with analyzing data and recommending action.

Excellent organizational skills and proven ability to effectively manage projects.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to succeed in a team-oriented environment.

Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc).

Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to regularly travel to target schools in Middletown, Meriden, and New Britain.

Ability to work some weekends, evenings, overnights and holidays throughout the year based on program needs.

Demonstrated commitment to work within a diverse environment and interact openly with individuals of different backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of a second language.

Exposure to TRIO or educational opportunity programs.

Awareness of post-secondary STEM pathways and careers.
