Overview
Status: Full-time, Permanent / Probationary "non-exempt" position.

Work Schedule: To be arranged.

Typical Activities
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this classification.

Groundsworkers typically perform work involving some or all of the following duties: plant, cultivate, fertilize, water and spray ornamental plants, shrubs, hedges, trees, lawns, and flowers; rake leaves; hoe weeds; clean trash from assigned areas including parking lots; prepare and treat soils for planting; maintain hoses, sprinklers, tools, supplies and equipment in proper condition and repair; trim trees. Hedges, and shrubs and erect tree supports; may operate and perform minor maintenance on small power-operated pavement sweepers, power mowers, small riding mowers, and other gardening power equipment; may assist in the preparing and lining of athletic fields for events; may occasionally assist a qualified specialist in sprinkler repair, spraying, tree trimming, or nursery functions; may drive pick-ups and other automotive equipment in performance of assigned duties; and may provide lead work direction to students and unskilled assistants.

Minimum Qualifications
Two years of experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas or in general grounds maintenance methods is required. General knowledge of the proper methods of planting, cultivating and caring for hedges, trees, and equipment is necessary, as well as the ability to recognize the more common species of shrubs, trees, and flowers grown in California. Technical training in landscape maintenance, water management or basic horticulture. Familiarity with irrigation systems and calsense irrigation controls is a plus.

Understanding of pesticides and their use; understanding integrated pest management practices and how they are applied to weed control. QWEL Certification or similar water efficiency training a plus. Incumbents will be required to possess a California Driver's License valid for the operation of any vehicle or equipment they are required to maintain and operate. A person employed by the state may be required to serve as a disaster service worker and participate in disaster recovery efforts; therefore, the incumbent will be required to be qualified to wear a respirator.

Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift, lower, push, and pull loads ranging in weight from 5-60 pounds; must be able to carry loads ranging from 20-50 pounds for distances up to 20 feet; must be capable of kneeling, reaching overhead, climbing stairs and ladders, walking, twisting, stooping, and bending; depending upon the project, employee may spend 20-50% of day sitting, 20-50% of day standing, 20-50% of day walking.

Completion of a pre-employment physical examination with acceptable results is required of the successful candidate.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current CSU employees who apply for the position.
