Summary:
Utah Valley University invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor to become an essential part of the growing faculty in the Communication Department's new Public Relations and Strategic Communication major. The successful candidate will teach a full (4/4) course load; prepare instructional materials (course outlines, syllabi, exams, etc.) as necessary; provide service to the department, college and university; engage in discipline-related scholarship; and develop strong ties with academic associations and professional organizations. Courses may include communication theory, research methods, public relations, public relations writing, public relations case studies, or public relations campaigns. Special consideration will be given to candidates who can teach courses related to content creation, social media, and digital analytics.

The Department of Communication currently consists of close to 20 full-time faculty members and numerous adjunct faculty members from the community. Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Communication(s) or a Communication-specific field from an accredited institution. ABD accepted, although doctorate must be completed (dissertation defended and accepted by granting institution) by June 30, 2021. Knowledge and skill in current instructional theories, strategies, techniques, and discipline content. Evidence of potential for scholarly/creative work consistent with a teaching university. Must be willing to teach all modalities (in-person, online, hybrid, weekend).


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Knowledge of and demonstrated competence of professional public
relations and/or strategic communication practices and applications.
• Knowledge of teaching through implementation of appropriate pedagogy, clear presentation, and preparation.
• Knowledge of classroom instruction, curriculum development, and program assessment (in-person and online).
• Knowledge of developing and coordinating undergraduate student programs and activities.
• Skills in interpersonal communication, problem-solving, and decision-making.
• Skills in content creation, social media, SEO, and digital analytics.
• Ability to provide service to the department, college, and university through shared faculty governance, including serving on departmental, college, and university-wide committees and assignments.
• Ability to present scholarly research at international, national, and regional conferences.
• Ability to publish scholarly research in communication and media journals.
• Ability to develop, coordinate, manage, and foster teamwork among diverse education and training programs.


Preferred Qualifications:
3+ years professional experience in public relations, strategic communication, journalism, advertising, media relations, or public works.
Evidence of online course design and teaching.
Evidence of previous teaching experience related to public relations, strategic communication, theory, and research methods courses. Special consideration will be given to those with teaching experience in one or more of the following areas: social media analytics, digital marketing, or media relations.
Evidence of research production via presentations at international (e.g., ICA), national (e.g., NCA, AEJMC), regional (Western States, Central States, etc.), and/or professional conferences as well as through publications in communication, public relations, media, and/or professional journals. Teaching and research strengths should complement current departmental curriculum.


Physical Requirements:
Requirements associated with teaching are continuous speaking, seeing, and hearing. Extended periods of standing, walking, and sitting are required. Extensive use of fine-hand manipulation associated with the use of a computer keyboard. Work is normally performed in a typical classroom/office work environment. Requires regular sitting and standing. Must have the mental and physical capabilities to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations. Must be able to communicate effectively. Requires large classroom, small-group and interpersonal interactions with students, faculty, and members of the campus.
