Scope of Job:
The Department of Human Development & School Services at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) College of Education and P-16 Integration invites applicants for an assistant professor, tenure track position in the Early Care and Early Childhood Education Programs to begin in fall 2021. The Department of Human Development & School Services is actively engaged in collaborating with both the university and Rio Grande Valley communities to move the university forward.

We seek a colleague who shares our commitment, has diverse experience in early childhood education and is willing to teach undergraduate and/or graduate early care or early childhood education courses in traditional, blended, and/or online formats; and supervise university students in early childhood settings. Responsibilities will also include advising students, recruiting and mentoring students, serving on department, college, and university committees, grant writing, and engaging in professional and scholarship activities. Faculty may be assigned to teach at either the Edinburg or Brownsville campus, or both. The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) is in the middle of one of the fastest growing areas in the nation, the southern tip of Texas known as the Rio Grande Valley.     The College of Education and P-16 Integration offers master's programs in educational leadership; curriculum and instruction with specializations in digital literacy, elementary mathematics and science education, mathematics education, science education, and social studies education; and school psychology; and counseling. We also offer Ed.Ds in educational leadership and curriculum and instruction with several specialization areas, including early childhood education. The College of Education and P-16 Integration is fully accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the Texas Education Agency (TEA). Further, the Ed.D in Curriculum and Instruction, housed in the College of Education and P-16 Integration, was recently ranked 8th in the nation of “Best Online Ed.D & Ph.D Programs in Education” by gradsource.


    Minimum Qualifications:
    An earned PhD or EdD in early childhood education, child development or a closely related field from an accredited institution, or ABD with designated completion date by September 1, 2021.

    Teaching:
    -Knowledge of the accreditation standards of the National Association for the Education of Young Children;
    -Knowledge of the Head Start Standards;
    -Strong understanding of multiple early childhood systems such as Head Start, public or private early childhood education centers, as well as public preschool and public primary education programs.
    -Demonstrated commitment to inclusion, social justice and equity in early childhood education; and culturally responsive and differentiated practices in fostering academic achievement.

    Research/Scholarly Work:
    -Evidence of scholarly research and/or publication in the area of specialization.
    -Results of research/scholarly work is published, disseminated in peer-reviewed journals, and/or presented at conferences or symposiums.
    -Evidence of a research thread related to their area of expertise.

    Service:
    -Active participation as a member of the university community by serving on committees such as administrative committees, search committees, university shared governance activities, and student advising.


    Discipline Specific Required Qualifications:


    Preferred Qualification:
    -Valid early childhood certification or other equivalent state certification.

    -Knowledge of the Texas Pre-K Guidelines and Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).

    -Three years of work experience with young children ages birth-8.

    Additional Information:
    UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
