LDSH 103-01 - Communications and Public Relations

This course provides an introduction to the major theories of communication as they relate to Public Relations with application to individuals, organizations, their markets, and society as a whole. Leaders need this knowledge, skills, and understanding in order to communicate effectively with the internal and external environment. This course affords students the opportunity to create a public relations campaign that may serve to inform their leadership project.

This course in Communications and Public Relations may seem to be a little different learning opportunity than the courses you have just completed. We will focus on content and skill building while integrating the disciplines of ethics and leadership. The assignments, for the most part, will be concrete and logical, and you will be called on to interpret and reflect on the material. The course provides the conceptual background for understanding public relations and communications concepts in theory as well as in practice.

Modality: This online (synchronous and asynchronous) course for mid-career professionals in any career field (e.g., corporate, non-profit, civil service) is part of a 2-year, BA degree completion program for mid-career, working adults in Leadership and Organizational Studies.

Minimum Qualifications:

A master’s degree in Leadership Studies, Adult Higher Education, Communication or a closely related discipline;

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience teaching mid-career adults

  • Demonstrated success with student-centered, collaborative learning

  • Commitment to creating inclusive classroom environments using culturally responsive pedagogies

  • Experience working in hybrid or online learning environments including contemporary uses of emerging electronic technologies in diverse classrooms

  • Proficient with Moodle learning management system and Zoom

  • Evidence of effective collaboration with a variety of colleagues

  • Demonstrated alignment of values with Saint Mary’s College’s Lasallian, Catholic, and Liberal Arts traditions in philosophy and action
