Open Rank Professor in School Counseling
The College of Education at the University of Iowa is making a major investment in faculty hires to create a group of faculty who will work together to address critical training and research needs related to School Counseling.
The Department of Rehabilitation and Counselor Education invites applications for a full time, 9-month tenure-track faculty position (open rank) in the School Counseling Program. This position will serve as part of the core faculty in the M.A. School Counseling program and supports the Ph.D. program in Counselor Education and Supervision. Candidates will be considered for ranks of assistant, associate, or full professor. Successful candidates qualified for the rank of full professor may be recommended for an endowed Distinguished Professorship in School Counseling.
The position will begin August 18, 2021. We seek individuals with evidence of significant professional promise for conducting research which addresses critical issues related to the school counseling practice such as mental health issues in schools, substance abuse in schools, professional school counseling practice, and professional development. We are looking for individuals who are committed to effective teaching and professional service to advance the school counseling profession. This individual should have demonstrated:
- the ability to produce empirically driven and practically relevant research in areas such as the personal or academic needs of K-12 students, mental health issues in schools, the role of the professional school counselor, or the effectiveness of counseling interventions in a school setting
- skills in effective teaching and clinical supervision.
- a commitment to professional service that advances the research, training, and clinical work intended to improve the lives of school aged children; and
- a commitment to the counseling profession as demonstrated by, for example, conference presentations, lectures, and professional memberships.
The successful candidate will join a research and training partnership with Counselor Education and Supervision, Rehabilitation Counseling, and Clinical Mental Health Counseling Programs to teach graduate-level courses. The program, following the College of Education trends, has strong department, college, university, and clinical community support, and is committed to an environment that values diversity and collegiality. The preferred candidate will have a strong commitment to a scientist-practitioner philosophy and will be experienced in implementation of CACREP accreditation standards in School Counseling, and (or a commitment to learn) Counselor Education and Supervision, Rehabilitation Counseling, and Clinical Mental Health Counseling Programs.
This position requires an earned doctorate in Counseling or Counselor Education and Supervision from a CACREP accredited program by May of 2021 or demonstrated experience as a full-time faculty member in a CACREP accredited school counseling program for a minimum of one full academic year before August of 2013.
- Concentration or specialization in School Counseling.
- Evidence of or potential for scholarly productivity, including publications in recognized counseling related journals.
- Evidence of or potential for attracting external funds.
- Experience in teaching graduate courses and supervising students in practica/internships.
- Clear indicators of a professional orientation to school counseling and collaborative work with peers.
- Experience working with diverse populations.
- Evidence of professional certifications or licensure related to counseling practice.
- Success in procuring competitive national funding for training, research, and/or implementation of interventions.
- Experience teaching, supervising, and coordinating in a CACREP-accredited graduate program.
- Experience with applied clinical research.
- Hold a national counseling certification or be eligible for it.
- Focus on research and/or interventions addressing mental health in schools.
- Teaching courses in the School Counseling and Counselor Education and Supervision programs consistent with the candidate’s interests and departmental needs,
- Conducting a program of research and publication in an area of specialization,
- Seeking and administering external grants for research, training and service,
- Advising students at the master’s and doctoral levels, and
- Supervising doctoral students’ dissertations,
- Develop as a future leader/coordinator of the MA program in School Counseling.
