The Department of History at California State University, Fresno invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in Asian History, 1600-present. Specialists of any area (East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia) are invited to apply. Candidates with a comparative, transnational, trans-imperial, or oceanic studies focus are especially encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will develop and offer undergraduate and graduate courses in their area of expertise as well as the department's World History surveys. The standard teaching load is 4/4 and is typically reduced during the first two years of the appointment, with competitive course releases available after that. The successful candidate will also maintain an active research and publishing agenda, and a commitment to student advising and university service.

Our Department: The Department of History at California State University, Fresno employs 12 tenured and tenure-track professors who serve hundreds of undergraduate majors and graduate students. We are an intellectually active department with expertise in a range of fields, and extensive publications in both academic and trade presses. Our faculty engages with the public by writing op-ed pieces for local and national newspapers and working with public radio and community organizations. Our graduate students go on to teach at high schools and community colleges, pursue careers in museums and archives, and continue their education in Ph.D. programs.

Qualifications:

Required Education (from an accredited institution or foreign equivalent):

An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in History by August 1, 2021, is required for an appointment to a tenure-track position.

Required Experience:

The successful candidate must demonstrate a commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated teaching potential at the undergraduate level
  • Evidence of an active research agenda
  • Interest in comparative, transnational, trans-imperial or oceanic studies
  • Ability to teach World History
