Position Information

This is a full-time, permanent (probationary) position.

Conditions of Employment

Possession of a valid Driver's License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

Major Duties

Under the general direction of the AVP of Student Success, the Social Worker position will be responsible for providing case management services for the entire TGS student population. Duties include conducting one-on-one and group case management meetings, referrals to campus and community resources based on student needs, working with county representatives, and providing workshops for the foster youth student population. This position will act as a liaison between the TGS program and government organizations such as the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) and the Department of Probation. Additionally, this position will remain informed of all legislation impacting foster youth at the child welfare level and will inform other TGS personnel of new policies and procedures relating to foster youth at the child welfare level that may have an impact on current and perspective TGS participants.

Qualifications

Required Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.

Required Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required. A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior. General knowledge of the principles, practices and trends of the Student Services field as well as general knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of the program area to which assigned; general knowledge of individual counseling techniques; general knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge, of the organizational procedures and activities of the specific campus to which the position is assigned. Working knowledge of student services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned. Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; advise students individually and in groups on complex student‑related matters; determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature; interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals.

Preferred Qualifications: A Master's degree in Social Work preferred. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the preferred education on a year-to-year basis.

Responsibilities

70% - Case Management Meetings and Documentation The Social Worker is responsible for conducting one-on-one and group case management meetings for the TGS student population. Meetings with students will consist of Needs Assessments, crisis management, goal-setting and follow up meetings and transition plan meetings. This position will address all needs within the scope of the position that derive from all student meetings. The Social Worker position will keep detailed documentation of each student appointment in addition to summarized notes of student meetings in EAB. This position will make referrals to other campus resources such as Student Psychological Services, the Career Center, University Advisement, the Toro Learning Center amongst other departments. The Social Worker will also make referrals to community resources such as iFoster, Transitional Housing Programs, and other organizations aimed at serving the needs of the foster youth and former foster youth populations.

15% - Identifying and Accessing Community Resources The TGS Social Worker is responsible for identifying community resources that can address the needs TGS students where the university can not provide support. This position is also responsible for identifying community organizations that the TGS program could formalize partnerships with and will develop partnership plans and processes between TGS and the organization. This position will maintain a working knowledge of the dependency court systems as it impacts foster youth and strengthen relationships as the liaison between the TGS program and government organizations such as the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) and the Department of Probation. As the liaison, the Social Worker is responsible for advocating for the needs of foster youth students in the TGS program and will assist in obtaining any legal/court documentation as it pertains to the rights of the students and their foster youth identity. Additionally, this position will remain informed of all legislation impacting foster youth at the child welfare level and will inform other TGS personnel of new policies and procedures relating to foster youth at the child welfare level that may have an impact on current and prospective TGS participants. TGS Social Worker will develop, maintain and update a community resource guide with community foster youth resources for TGS staff.

10% - Conducting Engagement Workshops and Information Sessions The TGS Social Worker is responsible for conducting workshops and information sessions within the scope of the Social Worker's role. Workshops for students could include information on the rights of foster youth, resources available within the community, and life skills workshops specific to the needs of the foster youth population. Workshops and information sessions to other campus personnel could include workshops on legislation and how it impacts current and former foster youth students at CSUDH, trends noticed from meetings with students, and solution based-techniques for working with foster youth in higher education.

5% - Other duties as assigned.
