Position Summary:

This position will work in the Fundus Photograph Reading Center (FPRC), a core imaging lab primarily involved in retinal image interpretation for clinical trials, both NIH grants and FDA submissions for ocular therapeutics. The candidate should have a PhD in clinical investigation with expertise in ophthalmology, clinical trial research and retinal image analysis as well as expertise in managing a large-scale imaging lab with funding from multiple sources (grants and contracts).

Principal Duties:

50% - Research and Scientific Responsibilities
- Plan and develop independent FPRC research projects.
- Write FPRC research grants and oversee the conduct, analysis, manuscript writing, and publication of FPRC research.
- Present FPRC research at scientific meetings to further scientific knowledge in clinical trials in ophthalmology and visual science.
- Serve as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator for federal research grants.
- Serve as a scientific resource to both federal and pharmaceutical FPRC sponsors in developing protocols and providing input regarding imaging outcomes and statistical analysis plans.

25% - Grading, Data Review and Quality Control
- Write disease-specific grading protocols and develop grading protocols for novel images and biomarkers.
- Oversee the training of graders in new grading protocols and provide them with expert opinion on interpreting retinal images.
- Monitor and evaluate the quality of grader performance both through informal review of images and through formal statistical analysis to ensure data meets expectations and is consistent over time and across studies.
- Review data before it is exported to sponsors to ensure results are biologically plausible.
- Assist in developing the regulatory compliance management plan including the development and maintenance of FPRC Standard Operating Procedures and Policies.

15% - Educational Activities
- Participate in both formal and informal teaching sessions for medical students and residents.
- Mentor medical students, residents and other trainees conducting FPRC research.

10% - Financial and Administrative Activities
- Review budgets, bids, and amendments.
- Assist with overall financial decisions within the FPRC.
- Assist with workforce planning and resource allocation within the FPRC.
