Position Title Campus Safety Sergeant Department Campus Safety Position Status Full-Time Position Type Regular Months per Year 12 Months Job Summary

A full-time (80 hours bi-weekly) Campus Safety Sergeant position is available for NYS certified Security Guard with supervisory experience. The Sergeant is the first line supervisor for Safety Officers. Responsibilities include security patrol and dispatching for the Skidmore College campus including all buildings and college-owned properties as well as enforce the rules and regulations of the College. A Sergeant will have responsibility for the actions of all of the subordinates on his/her shift. A Sergeant must be a trainer, mentor and be able to make decisions that will result in positive outcomes for the department and college. A Sergeant must be able to supervise effectively, discipline where appropriate, and conduct thorough investigations as warranted. In addition, a Sergeant shall ensure equitable distribution of work and will be assigned certain areas of responsibility as determined by the Director. The position requires the successful candidate be flexible with regards to scheduling demands.

Minimum Qualifications

Skills: This position requires the candidate to have good communication and interpersonal skills, effective writing skills and basic computer knowledge including word processing. The candidate must be able to demonstrate, through professional and life experiences, the ability to effectively supervise subordinates in a service oriented atmosphere which calls for quick decisions that affect life and safety issues on a diverse campus. The position also requires a working knowledge of the NYS Penal and Criminal Procedure Laws. The position also requires a valid NYS driver’s license and a current NYS Security Guard license.

Preferred Qualifications

The ability to conduct investigations and deal effectively with a diverse community in a service-oriented department is desirable. Having a working knowledge of the NYS Penal Law, Criminal Procedure Law, and other NYS laws is desired. Prior law enforcement experience is preferred.
