Job Summary
This is a full-time pharmacist position in a Veterinary Teaching Hospital with some holidays, weekends, and after hours call required. Hours for this position are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Hours of operation for the pharmacy may vary depending on clinic needs.
The role of the Pharmacist in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital is unique. It requires a multitude of skills and a wide knowledge base. Veterinary Pharmacy requires a different skill set and the Pharmacist must be knowledgeable of the species dependent dosing regimen and available medications for veterinary medicine.
The individual in this position is responsible for ensuring that prescriptions for clients are filled and labeled correctly, as well as maintaining inventory and tracking controlled drug use and overseeing the daily operation of the pharmacy.
Essential Functions
1. Reviews, corrects and fills prescriptions, and oversees prescriptions prepared by technicians and students.
2. Monitors controlled substances prescribed or acquired from vending machines to ensure valid prescriptions are obtained.
3. Distributes information on procedures to students, new DVMs, and others as appropriate.
4. Oversees general inventory procurement for the department.
5. Prepares appropriate documentation and records of drug usage.
6. Answers questions, counsels, and advises customers on drug interactions, side effects, dosage, and storage of pharmaceuticals.
7. Compounds medications, using standard formulas and processes.
8. Serves as instructor for pharmacy student rotations.
May supervise employees but supervision is not the main focus of the job.

Minimum Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of Federal and State guidelines and laws related to the management, storage, and dispensing of prescription medications.
Minimum Technology Skills
Minimum License and Certifications
Must be licensed as a pharmacist or eligible for licensure in the state of Alabama.
