Position Title: Welding, Instructional Assistant 2 Division/Department: Welding Location Albany Campus, Albany, OR Job Summary:

Assist and support the welding technology instructors in providing instruction and assistance by setting up labs and maintaining lab and equipment in a safe, clean and functional manner.

Required Qualifications:

Education and Experience: Position requires an AA/AS degree in a skilled discipline such as welding technology and a minimum of two years full-time related industry experience; or four years of related industry experience with industry sponsored in-service education and train-the-trainer programs; or a combination of formal training and experience. Industry certifications may substitute for education. A minimum of one year experience working with training employees in the industry or in an institutional setting involving mentoring activities and/or set up of real time work situations for assessment testing is desirable.

Knowledge and Skills: Must have a working knowledge of instructional techniques and skills sufficient to instruct and tutor students on an informal level. Considerable technical knowledge in the specific laboratory area of welding is necessary. Requires working knowledge of safety practices, and proper operation and techniques for use of equipment in the industry. Strong communication skills required in order to interact with and assist students.

Abilities: Ability to set up and maintain laboratory and equipment in a safe, clean and functional manner is required. Requires the ability to set up student projects which meet the instructional goals of faculty. Ability to function independently. Must be able to instruct students in the use of welding equipment and supplies, and personal protective equipment. Ability to operate all position welding using either oxy-acetylene or arc equipment. Ability to work with students one-to-one and in small groups. Must be able to communicate in both formal and informal setting with students, instructors, and other interested parties. Must be able to work respectfully with individuals of all cultures, backgrounds, perspectives, and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

Training received in the community college is preferred.

Prefer knowledge of other industrial manufacturing methods and techniques including mechanical and hydraulic systems.

Required valid Oregon driver’s license. A certificate of completion of an OSHA standard industrial lift truck operator safety course preferred.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Physical ability to stand for extended periods of time and operate demanding equipment. Sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to operate equipment. Requires normal hearing and speaking skills to communicate with staff and students. Requires visual acuity to read words and numbers and operate lab equipment. Seventy percent or more of the time duties require standing, and 30 percent requires some kneeling, stooping, or crouching, plus lifting of light to medium weight (10-50 pounds).

Work is performed in college industrial labs and classrooms with frequent contact with people. Exposure to noise extremes 40 percent of the time, and health or safety hazards exist 20 percent of time. May periodically require evening work.

Essential Duties:

Assists or tutors students in completing assigned class activities by observing the student performing the assigned tasks and asking questions of the student, making sure the student knows correct materials, tools, equipment and methods to complete the assignment. This includes developing materials and providing individualized instruction to disadvantaged students and students needing additional assistance.

Observes student work for proper safety procedures and use of personal protective equipment. May update safety procedures and practices, and maintains MSDS information. May stock safety supplies for sale to students, i.e., gloves, safety glasses, earplugs.

Maintains assigned work area in a clean and safe condition. Performs regular maintenance to laboratory equipment and machines, or coordinates needed repairs. Maintains supplies, parts and tools needed for laboratory to include placing orders, obtaining bids and/or purchasing items.

May oversee work of one or more student employees.

Assists in the selection of repair projects by meeting with members of the public to explain program policy on private projects. Prepares repair orders, completes preliminary cost estimates, tracks repair progress.

Prepares lab so assignments may be demonstrated by setting up the correct materials, tools, and equipment needed for the assignments. May assist staff with preparation of instructional and testing materials.

In absence of instructors due to illness or meetings, teaches/oversees welding class.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
