Job Summary

As an Assistant Professor of Sociology, the successful candidate will contribute to the program in multiple ways. In addition to program teaching responsibilities, the candidate will be responsible for recruitment of students and ensuring the professional and academic progression of our matriculated students. The candidate will perform scholarly activities including conducting re-search, presenting research results at professional conferences, producing publications and pursing external sources of funding to support such activities. The candidate will provide service to the Department, College, University, Community, and the Profession. The successful individual is expected to be an excellent teacher and mentor students in discipline-relevant experiences. This candidate will be expected to be an active member of the Program and Department, participating in programmatic development and assessment activities including curriculum review and the overall growth and development of the program.

Job Description

Typical duties include but are not limited to:

  • Plans and teaches courses in assigned course.
  • Prepares syllabi, instruction materials, coordinates lectures, tests, and evaluates.
  • Maintains highest possible standards of classroom instruction.
  • Keeps abreast of new information and developments in field of instruction.
  • Actively serves on university committees.
  • Actively participates in institutional meetings.
  • Maintains professional skills through regular professional development, and other activities appropriate to higher education faculty.
  • Assists with the development of curriculum.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.


Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Sociology or a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Undergraduate and/or graduate level teaching experience at a regionally accredited institution.


Preferred Qualification:

  • PhD in Sociology or a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Research agenda and teaching expertise in one or more of the following areas: Medical/Health, Sex and Gender, Work and Labor Markets, Stratification and Inequality, Sociological Theory and/or Research Methods.
  • Record of- or convincing evidence for potential for peer-reviewed publishing in the field or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in–or the convincing potential for–building an inclusive, equitable and diverse scholarly environment in teaching, mentoring, research, life experiences, or service .


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to contribute effectively and collegially to a positive, dynamic, and inclusive learning environment for a diverse student population.
  • Experience or commitment to the use of technology in university teaching. Interest in collaborating both within and outside the University in the development and delivery of instruction resulting in improved student learning. Must value continued scholarship and service to the university, with a demonstrated ability or potential for developing a successful research program if applicable.
