Primary Purpose of Position:
The Veterans Law Clinic provides free legal services to veterans attempting to obtain healthcare, disability, or other benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. This is a grant-funded, collaborative effort with the UNC School of Law Military and Veterans Law Clinic. The Visiting Director will be required to collaborate with the Director of UNC's Military and Veterans Law Clinic in providing services to veterans. The Visiting Director is responsible for teaching one clinically-based course in Veterans Law per semester, representing veterans before the Board of Veterans Appeals (BVA) and the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims (CAVC), supervising students representing veterans before these entities, and carrying out other responsibilities required by the law school, as assigned. Depending on clinic enrollment, the Visiting Director may be required to teach an additional doctrinal course each semester.


Minimum Education/Experience:
Applicants should hold a J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited institution, be a member in good standing with a state bar (or be licensed and in good standing with the District of Columbia) that permits them to appear before the BVA and CAVC, and have at least five (5) years of experience practicing law, preferably in a related field. The successful applicant will be accredited with the BVA, be a member in good standing of the CAVC Bar, and have a minimum of three (3) years of experience with representing veterans before the BVA and CAVC.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
A successful candidates will exhibit a strong interest in clinical teaching, show a demonstrated commitment to public interest lawyering, and show potential for scholarship and success as a clinical teacher. Candidates should have strong writing and interpersonal communication skills. This position customarily involves in-person teaching and client representation. However, if public health standards require otherwise (e.g., because of the current COVID-19 pandemic), candidates must still be willing to meet with students and clients in-person from time to time but deliver some course instruction virtually in compliance with the School of Law’s current Distance Education Policy and ABA Standards 304 and 310. If applicable, applicants must be able to satisfy the North Carolina State Bar requirements to be able to supervise students under the Certification Standards for students to be able to engage in the practice of law in the requisite forums (see 27 N.C.A.C. 1C, Section .0200, Rules Governing Practical Training of Law Students).
