Faculty Position in Statistics

Position: The School of Science and Mathematics at Truman State University is seeking applicants for a non-tenure-track position in Statistics and/or Data Science to begin August 2021. The position is expected to be at the rank of Assistant Professor. The position is a one-year, full-time appointment on an 11-month contract with annual renewal depending on performance, departmental needs, and funding.

Responsibilities: Teach undergraduate statistics and graduate data science classes offered by the Department of Statistics and perform other duties as assigned.

Location:  Remote option. Qualified applicants may request to work from their home location.

Required Qualifications: A doctoral degree in statistics, data science, data analytics, computer science, or a closely related field, with substantial coursework or teaching experience in statistics and/or data science by August 2021.

Candidates will be evaluated on:

• academic qualifications as listed above,
• demonstrated potential for and evidence of excellence in teaching college-level statistics and data science,
• evidence of strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills,
• experience with modern statistical software (including R, Python, and Hadoop/Spark),
• ability to teach multiple graduate courses taught within the professional data science program (including Big Data Management, Machine Learning, Big Data Ethics and Security, and program prerequisites),
• ability to teach multiple undergraduate statistics courses taught within the statistics program (including Basic Statistics and Data Science), and
• desire and ability to support Truman’s liberal arts mission, including how statistics and data science students consider communication, ethics, and broader impact on society.

Program: The Department of Statistics at Truman State University is starting a new Professional Masters Degree in Data Science and Analytic Storytelling, in addition to a graduate certificate in data science, and an undergraduate statistics major with concentrations in classical statistics and data science. The department has 10 full-time faculty members with a variety of specialties who support our programs and campus-wide needs with over 50 sections of undergraduate statistics and 16 sections of graduate data science courses annually. We also offer an undergraduate Statistics Minor and actively support an Actuarial Science minor and other interdisciplinary areas.
