Positions: A tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor is available in the Department of Biology at Truman State University, a top-ranked public liberal arts and sciences university.

 

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will contribute to teaching needs in the areas of microbiology, cell biology and/or genetics, and specialty upper-level electives. Periodic contributions to teaching an introductory course in cellular and molecular biology, a freshman seminar and/or an introductory writing course will also be expected. The successful candidate will be expected to provide high-quality research experiences involving undergraduates that complement existing research programs. The particular area of research and the focal level of biological organization are flexible. Additional opportunities for offering courses that support the liberal arts mission of the university will be periodically available, and service to the department and university are expected.

 

Required Qualifications: The position requires a PhD for rank of Assistant Professor. PhD candidates (ABD) are welcome to apply. Completion of the PhD is required by May 2022.

 

Candidates will be evaluated on:

  • Ability to teach microbiology, cell biology and/or genetics.
  • Ability to teach an introductory course in cellular and molecular biology
  • Evidence of actual or potential teaching effectiveness.
  • A plan for research that complements or diversifies existing programs.
  • Evidence of actual, or potential for, involvement of undergraduates in the candidate’s research program.
  • Evidence of actual or interest in being involved in university service.
  • Ph.D. in Biology, or related field, by the start date.
  • Commitment to teaching at an undergraduate liberal arts institution.
  • Effective written communication skills and attention to detail.

Program: The Department of Biology is part of the School of Science and Mathematics at Truman State University. The Department has 20 faculty members, approximately 500 undergraduate majors. Beyond our majors curriculum, the discipline offers courses in Truman’s Liberal Studies Program (LSP); opportunities for faculty members to pursue interdisciplinary teaching and research occur both within the School and as part of the LSP.
