At CDU we are seeking a talented Associate Dean, Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing.

 

Background

The Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing at CDU was founded in 2010 to address the growing need for nurses who are dedicated to providing healthcare in medically underserved and under-resourced areas in California, the US and globally. Since inception, it has graduated over 1,500 nursing professionals, including over 1,100 family nurse practitioners. As of Fall 2019, there were 413 students enrolled in the School of Nursing; 30 in undergraduate nursing programs (BSN) and 383 in graduate nursing programs (MSN and Post-Master’s Certificates). Over 80% of CDU students are from communities of color. In 2017, the Chronicle of Higher Education named CDU the second most diverse four-year private nonprofit college in the nation. More than 80 percent of CDU students report returning to practice and provide much-needed care in medically underserved communities following graduation.

 

Position Description:

We are seeking a dynamic and innovative nurse educator/administrator who collaborates with and empowers faculty; fosters an environment of respect and inclusion; builds internal relationships across campus; and develops and nurtures community relationships. Competitive candidates should have a strong record of academic leadership, research funding or external funding for academic programs, and experience with program assessment and evaluation. Along with the Dean of the School, the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs will provide leadership in the daily operations of the Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing and assume overall leadership in the absence of the School Dean. The individual will assist with strategic planning, implementation of strategic plans and mentoring of faculty. The Associate Dean will also provide leadership for inter-professional education and engagement with the diverse community surrounding CDU. The ideal candidate will advance the mission of Charles R. Drew University in its quest to promote excellence and diversity within the field of nursing and healthcare to underserved communities.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

PLANNING

In concert with the Dean and the University Provost, the Associate Dean prioritizes goals for the School based on the University Strategic Plan and develops implementation plans and other approaches to meet those goals. Ensures that the School's resource base and organizational structure are appropriate to achieve its defined goals in the context of a constantly changing and ever-growing environment. Provides leadership for all short- and long-range space planning in the School of Nursing.

 

ACADEMIC PLANNING, ASSESSMENT, AND ACCREDITATION

Advises and assists the Dean and Program Directors on all matters concerning the development, enhancement, and administration of the School's current and long-range academic plan. Conducts studies to determine the effectiveness of the School's programs and units and their contribution to attaining the School’s instructional and research goals. Analyzes and prepares reports for use in resource planning to meet diverse instructional and research needs. Has a clear understanding of the standards of accreditation for Schools of Nursing (e.g., BRN and CCNE) and other University accrediting bodies (e.g., WSCUC).

 

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

Works with the Dean, Program Directors, the University Provost, and the CDU Chief Financial Officer to lead the development, and coordination, of the School's budget according to campus resource allocations and in alignment with the School’s strategic initiatives. Provides leadership, guidance, and transparency for all business functions in the School, including optimizing all business processes and identifying internal control points. Coordinates with department administrators to ensure all business processes align throughout the school. Ensures development of systems that maximize resource expenditures while simultaneously limiting the School’s risk and liability.

 

ACADEMIC PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT AND FACULTY AND STAFF DEVELOPMENT

Works within the School’s shared governance system to manage employment related matters of faculty (full time and adjunct). Coordinate with the Office of Professional Development and Assessment to ensure continuing faculty development and retention and program assessment.

 

Supports the University’s shared governance model and provides resources to the School’s faculty association to ensure parity with faculty associations in the other colleges at CDU with regard to governance, appointments and promotions. Supports collaboration and harmonization of the School’s governance, appointments and promotions with the University as a whole. Builds strong, respectful, healthy relationships with nursing faculty and staff. Guides, supports, motivates and empowers nursing faculty to utilize innovative teaching concepts. Fosters cooperation and a team approach across all campus programs and promotes rapport within the campus.

 

Promotes staff professional development, manages and oversees the direction of the School's support staff. Responsible for organizational review and development, long-range personnel planning, employee training and development, and policy formulation and analysis.

 

ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT AND STUDENT AFFAIRS

In concert with the leadership of Enrollment Management, leads functions related to marketing, recruitment, admission, and enrollment tracking in the School of Nursing. Works with Student Services leadership on academic advising and retention, overseeing all processes related to academic progress, student records, certifying degrees, credentialing faculty and school administrators.

 

OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT

In concert with the Dean, work with the Office of the Provost, Risk Management Office, Academic Computing, and the Space Committee, manages administrative operations for the School, including facilities, space allocation, technology support, scheduling, information services, fiscal transactions, and faculty/instructional support. Oversees institutional research functions, including data management, and internal and external reporting.

 

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT

Engages with the community surrounding CDU, participates in official university and SON events, assists with SON communications, outreach, and special programming. Demonstrates strong commitment to community engagement with measurable outcomes that benefit both the school of nursing and the community. 

 

Develops and maintains relationships with academic and community units such as Pipeline and School Partnership Programs, Student Opportunities to Advance Research (SOAR), Community Faculty, Office of Strategic Advancement, and the Urban Health Institute.

 

EXTERNAL WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

The Associate Dean must cultivate a good working relationship with the California Board of Registered Nursing, Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, and other nursing accrediting and professional organizations.

 

Qualifications/Requirements:

EDUCATION:

  • Regionally accredited Doctorate degree in Nursing, Education or related field required.

 

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant administrative experience managing an academic, degree granting unit, including responsibility for all relevant administrative functions as well as support for faculty and academic programs.
  • Record of peer-reviewed publication.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills.
