General Summary/Purpose

The Research Program Assistant II will supportCOVID-19 clinical studies in the Division of Infectious Diseases. This is aone-yearNIH funded study to speed innovation, development, and commercialization of COVID-19 testing technologies. The objective of the JHU study is to collect and test specimens from symptomatic and asymptomatic participants and their household contacts in order to evaluate new point-of-care and home-based tests, improve clinical laboratory testing, and evaluate transmission dynamics. The Research Program Assistant II will join a dynamic team and contribute to critical research in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Participate in the compilation of patient data for research in relation to ongoing study.
  • Enroll participants in ongoing study and conduct regular follow-up communication with participants. Instruct participants in sample collection and research procedures. Pack, label and ship swabs and other testing supplies.
  • Work effectively in a team environment to coordinate and execute study functions.
  • Provide research assistance for study by researching, collecting and updating information in a timely manner, including filing, faxing, chart review and literature searches as needed.
  • Assist in the smooth movement of samples from collection to labs and ensure chain of custody to the biorepository and to other labs involved in the analysis of samples.
  • Work on complex studies requiring high levels of knowledge, coordination and data abstraction. Assist in analysis and verification of the accuracy of research patient data.
  • Correct errors in database when necessary.
  • Compile regular progress and status reports of this data.
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings.
  • Participate in conferences with study sponsors, which may include the preparation of reports or presentations.
  • Submit applications to IRB for review and approval.
  • Participate in training courses as required and/or needed.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED required. Bachelor's degree preferred.

Experience:

Two years related experience required. Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications

Health related studies or behavioral sciences preferred. Research experience helpful.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

MS Excel, MS Access, MS PowerPoint, and MS Word required. Flexibility in work schedule is required. Applicants must have high attention to detail and be able to work independently.Experience in study coordination and fluency in Spanish are preferred but not required.

May need to provide own transportation to outside clinics – mileage will be reimbursed.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
