The primary purpose of the School of STEM Graduate Career Counselor is to provide career advising and counseling to students in the graduate programs offered by the School of STEM. Working under the supervision of the Director of STEM Graduate Academic Services, the person in this role will offer comprehensive career guidance to both on-campus and online students, collaborate with Career Services on employer relations and events, and work with other key staff and University partners to enhance a comprehensive support plan with the goal of expanding the number, quality & diversity of professional career opportunities available for students. Internally, this position integrates career activities and advising into academic departments, classrooms, and student organizations, on behalf of the School of STEM Graduate Programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Student Career Advising and Programming:

• Provide one-on-one student advising both in person and online, group career seminars and other related events such as career treks, to help students in the computing and engineering graduate programs secure jobs and internships by using industry and company knowledge to provide targeted advice and support.
• Partner with staff and faculty in the School of STEM, and in addition alumni and business leaders, to provide opportunities for students to practice job seeking skills for technical companies such as technical resume and interview workshops, salary negotiation, and other technical industry specific job search strategies.
• In collaboration with faculty, develop professional and career advising learning opportunities that integrate with graduate students’ overall educational experience.
• Provide ongoing career support to alumni to enhance the value of a UWB STEM computing or engineering graduate degrees.
• Utilize web-based applications, databases and editing software such as Learning Management Systems (Canvas) CRMS such as Slate and Nutshell, Web publishing such as Kentico and Marketo as tools to connect to various stakeholders including prospective employers, students, staff, faculty, and Advisory Board members.

Employer Relations & Development:

• In partnership with Career Services, School of STEM, and Advancement, educate employers about the UW Bothell STEM graduate degree programs, and available recruiting services, including company information sessions, on-campus interviews, resume searches, job and internship postings, and career fairs.
• Coordinate targeted events/programming and quarterly treks, in partnership with schools and relevant clubs.
• Perform regular and ad hoc reporting on employer relations and development efforts, including tracking student destination data and employer and stakeholder engagement data.
• Assist employers in developing effective recruiting strategies and setting goals; enforce University of Washington Bothell recruiting guidelines with employers and students.
• Support the strategic employer development plan, including outreach to new employers and support and/or coordination of employer visits as appropriate.
• Promote School of STEM diversity by developing and maintaining relationships with cultural & international student clubs & organizations, offering guidance and leadership to encourage full participation in co-curricular programming.
• Collaborate closely with Career Services and the School of STEM to support the School of STEM Advisory Board and subsequent Division level Advisory Boards.

General Outreach and Planning Support:

• In collaboration with team members, develop and maintain Career Services employer CRM and marketing materials relevant to STEM graduate programs.
• Keep abreast of market trends and stakeholder interests; collect, evaluate, assess, and report data related to program and program goals.
• Recommend and implement program modifications based on results.

Other:

• Assist with Career Services and STEM Graduate School activities and events.
• Collaborate with STEM undergraduate academic services staff on overlapping activities.
• Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, education, or related field.
• 2-3 years’ experience in hiring, career counseling, recruiting in the tech field or work in human resources for technical companies.
• Demonstrated commitment and experience working with a diverse group of constituents, students, faculty, and/or staff in a positive and effective manner.
• Excellent organizational and group presentation skills.
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.
• Experience with web-based resources such as Canvas and Kentico, and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher.
• Experience with employer relations in a career setting.

Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum requirements.

DESIRED:

• Masters degree in a technical field, higher education, counseling, psychology, or other related fields.

Conditions of employment:

• This position will have a private office for student appointments, adjacent to other members of the advising team.
• The scheduled hours for this position will align with the office hours held by other Advisors, typically Mondays through Fridays from 8 AM to 5 PM.
• This position requires the ability to work occasional evenings and weekends for various events.
