The University seeks a highly qualified, experienced, and future-oriented professional for the position of Vice President for Student Development and Campus Life. Reporting to the President and serving as a member of the University’s senior executive team, the Vice President is responsible for providing vision, leadership, and effective management for all non-academic areas that impact the quality of students’ experience and development throughout their years at the University.
The major areas reporting to the Vice President include: Dean of Students, including orientation, leadership and social justice programming, conduct, and Title IX; Residential Life; Dining and Auxiliary Services; University Health Center, Counseling and Psychological Services, Disability Services, and Health Promotion; Campus Business Services, including Dining, auxiliary services, and business partnerships; Intercollegiate Athletics and Student Recreation; Student Organizations, Greek Life, and Student Campus Activities; University Police and Emergency Medical Services; and Student Communications.
The Division of Student Development and Campus Life is passionately committed to creating a warm and inclusive campus community for all students and encompasses a diverse and talented team of close to 200 student affairs practitioners, and a student paraprofessional staff of nearly 900, who deliver exceptional facilities, programs, services and experiences to students and the broader campus community.
Specific responsibilities of the Vice President will include: developing the vision and strategy for the office of Student Development and Campus Life including the design, implementation, and growth of a comprehensive range of student development programs and campus services, while achieving the goals and objectives of the University; providing expert management of the Division’s personnel and resources; establishing and implementing short and long term organizational goals, policies and operating procedures; engaging all key constituents across the University, in particular Enrollment Management, Academic Affairs, and Facilities; understanding the challenges and opportunities of a large public institution located in the midst of a highly dense metropolitan geography, particularly in a post-COVID world; identifying the appropriate resources to support students from varying backgrounds and experiences, including traditional, transfer, and adult learners; championing access, diversity, equity and inclusion at the University.
Preferred Qualifications will include:
- A progressive record of achievement, working within the field of student affairs.
- Advanced degrees in a relevant discipline and a strong orientation to public higher education.
- An informed vision for the future in the area of student development and campus life.
- Significant leadership and management experience, including strong budget and personnel management skills.
- Strong communication and collaborative skills.
- The capacity to thrive in a large complex public university in New Jersey.
- Demonstrated professional involvement and reputation in the field of student affairs.
- A personality that is assured, out-going, comfortable with crisis-management, level-headed, and, preferably, with a good sense of humor.
