Instructional Media Producer

The Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning (CITL) invites applications for a full-time Instructional Media Producer (IMP) at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. As part of the Instructional Media Resources (IMR) team, this position works closely with faculty, lecturers/instructors, and academic professionals to plan and execute media production consistent with pedagogical and research goals. This position coordinates curricular media productions across teaching delivery methods and collaborates with campus media professionals to assist with the design and development of shared media resources to benefit the faculty, staff, and students at the University of Illinois.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Instructional Media Design & Development

  • Meet with faculty to help design their upcoming courses and redesign existing courses. Advise faculty and instructional designers, offering creative suggestions for instructional media design, working with them on curriculum and syllabi. Provide faculty with consultation and support services in the areas of instructional media design and development.
  • Produce pedagogically sound media content based on best practices for online learning. Collaborate with instructors on storyboards and planning documents to facilitate effective integration of online learning content, learning management systems, slides, and student assessment.
  • Direct video shoots in the studio and field. Efficiently edit videos using the standardized IMR post-production processes and Adobe Creative Cloud.
  • Develop documentation on instructional media strategies, appropriate uses of instructional media, and best practices.

Supervision, Project Management, Training, Communication & Research

  • Lead and manage media production for university courses and CITL projects across multiple teaching formats through pre-production with faculty/instructors, production, post-production, and delivery through campus platforms; ensuring appropriate branding, copyright, and accessibility guidelines are met.
  • Ensure that projects are completed on time and meet high pedagogical and production quality standards.
  • Collaborate in the design, development, and delivery of workshops and training to faculty and staff in the use of instructional media and educational best practices.
  • Provide real-world mentoring and training to production students where they'll need expertise in video shoots, lighting, sound, editing, and post-production.
  • Assist in research on instructional media best practices, technologies, and multimedia hardware/software to support teaching and learning.

Teaching & Learning Media Support

  • Provide guidance to faculty in effective uses of multimedia to more effectively run their courses, keep students engaged, and achieve better pedagogical outcomes.
  • Respond to faculty and staff requests for media content, help with web-based tools for content submission.
  • Work with faculty to create multimedia-based student assessments. Prepare learning aids to help students complete multimedia assessments in their courses.
  • Maintain knowledge of and aptitude for evolving media forms, techniques and applications for education.

Required Education, experience and qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 4 years' relevant work experience (e.g., educational technology and/or media production).
  • 3 years' experience managing media projects and production teams.
  • Professional experience working in the studio - including lighting and shooting on green screen, operating professional video and audio equipment.
  • Professional experience with field production - including the video recording and streaming of live events, the use of portable lighting and sound equipment, and multi-camera editing.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs.
  • Demonstrated proficiency using the Adobe Production Suite, specifically Premiere, Photoshop and After Effects.
  • Proven ability to successfully develop educational media content with faculty, lecturers/instructors, staff, and students.
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple projects with competing deadlines.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office, project management software, Teams, Zoom, and other remote working and teaching tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as in a self-directed, proactive, and creative manner.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively and productively.
  • Flexibility in scheduling, as events occasionally may include evening and/or weekend work.
  • Valid Illinois driver's license and ability to travel occasionally.

Preferred education, experience and qualifications:

  • Master's degree.
  • 5 years' relevant work experience (e.g., educational technology and/or media production).
  • 3 years' experience in video or media production in a University setting.
  • Experience shooting live and live-to-tape in the studio and field, working with Blackmagic ATEM switchers.
  • Working knowledge of existing and emerging digital media technologies, such as 360-degree video, AR, and VR, and applications for their use in education.
  • Working knowledge of instructional principles as applied in media for higher education.
  • Experience working with OBS, Camtasia and/or similar screen recording software.
  • Proficiency in learning management systems, particularly BlackBoard and Moodle.

This position is a 100% full time, twelve month, benefits-eligible Academic Professional position. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
