Job Description

The Physics Department at Virginia Tech invites applications for a postdoctoral research associate position in theoretical condensed matter in the group of Prof. Kyungwha Park, with focus on electronic structure and magnetic properties of point defects in different silicon carbide polytypes within and beyond density functional theory. Such defects in silicon carbide have been shown to be useful for applications in quantum information science, similarly to nitrogen vacancy centers in diamond. The position is available starting from Fall 2020 or later, and is renewable for one additional year after the first year, upon mutual agreement. The position is open until filled. Collaborations with theorists and experimentalists at Virginia Tech and other institutions are expected.

Required Qualifications

The successful applicant must have a recent Ph.D. in either theoretical condensed matter physics or a closely related field, and have knowledge in magnetism and electronic structure calculations, such as a background in electronic structure calculations. Experience with programming language, shell scripts, Unix commands, and parallel computing. Advanced knowledge of magnetism, quantum mechanics, and theoretical solid state or condensed matter physics. Good communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with code development. Knowledge of abinitio methods beyond densityfunctional theory. Spinorbit interaction.
