General Summary/Purpose:

TheChild and Adolescent Health Measurement Initiative (CAHMI)is a center within theDepartment of Population, Family and Reproduction Healthat the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD.Under the supervision of the Center Director, the Sr. Research Data Analyst will collaborate on innovative Center and grant-funded projects to advance evidence based policy and practice and effectively engage families and communities in efforts to promote healthy child development and improve health outcomes for all children, youth and families in the United States and beyond.

The Sr. Research Data Analyst will play a central role in the day to day development, operations, quality control, documentation and continuous improvement of the CAHMI’s data-driven and web-based (1) National Maternal and Child Health Data Resource Center (DRC)(www.childhealthdata.org), (2) Community and Family Engagement Research Network (C-FERN) “Cycle of Engagement” (COE) model and tools and (3) Maternal and Child Health Online Measurement Compendium and other related research projects.

The successful candidate must be a self-starter with theability to work independently and manage multiple projects in a dynamic environment with changing priorities required. They musthave excellent written and verbal communications skills and strong conceptualizing, teamwork, problem solving, decision making, detail orientation and project management skills. Also required are demonstrated skills managing and conducting analysis using survey databases, specifying and documenting procedures and documenting IT systems security and operations, such as needed to ensure HIPAA compliance and program sustainability. Proficiency with SAS or SPSS is required and ideally the candidate will also have experience working with STATA and SQL. Specific hands-on experience in the development and analysis of large, nationally representative survey datasets such as the National Survey of Children’s Health and data collected from patients in clinical settings is preferred.

Success requires knowledge about and a commitment to improving the maternal and child health systems and services in the US in order to improve health outcomes and well-being of mothers, children, youth, families and communities. Candidates must be comfortable effectively engaging CAHMI leaders, state and federal government partners and expert, family and youth stakeholders to present and reach agreement regarding technical issues of measurement, methods, and the use of data and research findings. Ability to conduct data analysis related to research papers and assistance with grant writing and presentation of research and data to external partners is important.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Define and oversee processes to ensure the development and backend management of databases, variable coding and data analysis, visualization and online data query display proceduresfor the operation of National Survey of Children’s Health (NSCH) Data Resource Center (DRC). Become expert in and assume increasing responsibility to oversee the cleaning, coding and formulation and documentation the NSCH Data Resource Center and related “Data In Action” (DIA) online data resource projects of the CAHMI. Also includes becoming expert in the formulation of all analytic variables and ability to ensure accuracy of descriptive technical information included in the DRC and related DIA online data query systems led by the CAHMI. Assist at all levels with the development of public facing materials to ensure data users understand the topical and technical properties of the data. Synthesize complex information into easy-to-understand materials. Conduct similar activities for other CAHMI data resources and research.
  2. Supervise IT and software engineer contractorsto ensure timely, quality work and the continuous documentation of IT systems, software code, data security and key procedures related to all CAHMI projects. Define and manage processes essential for the upkeep and continued development with contractors and staff of “plain language” documentation of the CAHMI’s IT system/network, software, code bases, security procedures and procedures central to the CAHMI IT and data-based projects
  3. Train staff and partners on proceduresand IT systems to standardize processes and ensure the sustainability of essential program operations, including ensuring the compliance of IT and database management systems with HIPAA and other federal and institutional policies
  4. Conduct measurement validation, statistical analysis and coordinate data integrity and double- checking processes:Formulate and conduct required analysis in collaboration of staff to assess and report on the validity of new and emerging data elements and variables used across CAHMI projects. Excellent bivariate statistical analysis skills are required. Experience with confirmatory factor analysis, structural equation modeling, latent class analysis, logistic regression analysis, multi-level modeling and creation of visualization of data (e.g. US maps) are preferred. Coordinate processes to double check all online data and web-based tools and oversee staff in doing so.
  5. Develop codebooks for users of the National Survey of Children’s Health datasets and provide technical assistance on the valid and effective use of this data:Assume increasing leadership to oversee the development of SAS, STATA and SPSS codebooks delineating and documenting measures and items included in the NSCH and ensure consistency of documentation between codebooks and the online data resource website and data query tool.
  6. Collaborate and assume increasing leadership in the development of policy relevantissue and data briefs, process flow infographics, video tutorials and related materials to engage and educate researchers and policy, program and family leaders.
  7. Collaborate in the automation of data reportsbased on data held in a SQL database for purposes of reporting information to key policy, provider and family audiences.
  8. Collaborate with software and systems partners to identify innovative technical solutionsfor moderately complex application development tasks related to the DRC and COE web-based data-in-action resources

Supervision:Supervise other research staff, student interns, consultants and contractors

Other tasks include:

  • Partner in the design and development of peer reviewed publications
  • Partner in the creation of new collaborations and funding developments to further advance the work of the CAHMI. Assist in grant proposal writing and prepare, manage, track submissions, and ensure all necessary documentation, guidelines, and protocols are followed.

Minimum Qualifications(Required)

Master's degree in related discipline. Typically require PhD.

One (1) year related experience. Require highly specialized advanced knowledge, education and/or training in a specialized field of study to conduct research.

Demonstrated ability on significant graduate project or additional doctoral education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in public health, public policy, biostatistics, public administration, or related field. Typically require PhD.
  • 1 year related experience working with a statistical software package one of which must be SAS or STATA (SPSS also preferred). Require highly specialized advanced knowledge, education and/or training in a specialized field of study to conduct research.
  • Demonstrated ability on significant graduate project or additional doctoral education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

  • This will include demonstrated competency in creating new variables, conducting moderately complex bi-variate and multi-variable analyses and demonstrated accuracy in interpreting and reporting prevalence estimates and other statistical data and analytic findings

  • Ability to work independently and solve problems as they arise and communicate effectively with staff, colleagues and PI/Director
  • Knowledge of population-based survey research design and methods, and ability to synthesize and interpret statistical findings.
  • Highly efficient computer skills required (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe, Access).
  • Must be a self-starter, innovative thinker and possess excellent communication, conceptualizing, teamwork, problem solving, decision making, detail orientation, writing and project management skills.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and be proactively responsible and accountable to define and confirm work, and to effectively prioritize managing multiple projects while setting and meeting self-set and agreed upon deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work with a wide variety of audiences, including written communication, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and presenting at national conferences.
  • Preferred experience working with pediatric practices, health plans, or federal/state/local MCH programs.
  • Preferred knowledge of programs, policies, and data sources related to maternal and child health, and ideally also related to children with special health care needs (CSHCN) and early childhood development.
