Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

The Office of Research is currently seeking to hire a full-time Contract and Research Administrator to join the Office of Sponsored Programs team. This position will work as part of a team in support of educational programs to enhance faculty and staff understanding of the research process at VCU, and their associated obligations and responsibilities. The position will interface with the VCU Clinical Research Services, VCU Innovation Gateway, VCU Office of Research Integrity and Ethics and the VCU Office of Research Subjects Protection units. The Administrator is responsible for the following duties:

- Provide guidance to the University community related to clinical and non-clinical research projects and other sponsored/supported collaborations with industry in a manner consistent with the comprehensive mission of the University
- Provide personalized assistance (through RAMS - SPOT database, face to face and/or by phone) to faculty in obtaining and managing external funding/support for industry sponsored/supported projects and clinical trial contracts
- Provide support to faculty and staff through the central office review of proposals and administrative actions, the drafting and negotiation of acceptable terms and timely execution of industry sponsored/supported agreements and internally/externally sponsored/supported clinical trial contracts
- During the review, negotiation and awarding process; analyze and correctly interpret regulatory and contractual requirements and ensure compliance with sponsor requirements, university policies, and applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations associated with industry supported sponsored projects and externally supported clinical trials
- Actively seek to streamline clinical trial contracting and the reduction of time to study activation through the use of approved templates and Master Agreements with external entities
- Responsible for pre-award and post-award duties such as reviewing proposals, preparing, negotiating, executing, and managing research agreements, contract amendments, and confidentiality agreements with for-profit industry as well as preparation and/or negotiation of clinical trial contracts, subcontracts, amendments and modifications with for-profit industry and non-industry (non-profit and federal flow-through) sponsors.

The ideal candidate must possess a good working knowledge of academic research operations and generally accepted business practices. Must possess organizational, analytical, and problem solving skills with attention to detail. Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential. Strong team and collaborative skills are essential. The ability to prioritize and perform multiple tasks in a dynamic and fast-paced environment is required. Ability to provide excellent customer service to a diverse population required. The ideal candidate must demonstrate the ability to creatively resolve problems related to sponsored programs administration in negotiating and managing clinical trials and research contracts. Have strong knowledge of federal regulations including but not limited to Uniformed Guidance and Federal Acquisition Regulations preferred. A Bachelor’s degree in related field with progressive work experience in research administration is preferred. Experience with Research Administration Management System Sponsored Program Online Tracking ( RAMS - SPOT ) or comparable sponsored program electronic database preferred.

- Previous experience with Research Administration Management System Sponsored Program
- Possess strong organization, analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail
- Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential
- Strong team and collaborative skills are essential
- Ability to prioritize and perform multiple tasks in a dynamic and fast-paced environment is required
- Ability to provide excellent customer service to a diverse population required
- Must demonstrate the ability to creatively resolve problems related to sponsored programs administration in negotiating and managing clinical trials and research contracts
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU

Preferred Hiring Standards

The ideal candidate will also meet the following preferred hiring standards:

- Bachelor’s degree in a related field with progressive work experience in research administration preferred
- Working knowledge of academic research operations and generally accepted business practices
- Online Tracking ( RAMS - SPOT ) or comparable sponsored program electronic database preferred
- Strong knowledge of federal regulations including but not limited to Uniformed
Guidance and Federal Acquisition Regulations preferred
