Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities
The College of Humanities and Sciences invites applicants to apply for the position of Director of Sponsored Programs. One of the primary goals of this position is the leadership, management and oversight of the College of Humanities and Sciences -Sponsored Programs Office. This position will be responsible for the coordination of pre/post-award activities, particularly with a focus on the integration and intersection between areas. This person will focus on high-priority and complex proposal, financial activities and ensuring compliance at all levels. This role manages multiple staff positions and focuses on cross-training to ensure skill flexibility. Lastly, this position will serve as the first point of contact and resource, and will lead outreach activities for College faculty and staff.
Duties include but are not limited to:
•Provides leadership and development activities in support of the promotion and growth of externally funded activities.
•Further develops and implement pre/post-award focused training and outreach efforts to the institutional faculty and staff.
•Supervises CHS - SPO personnel. Directs performance appraisals and assists with career development and growth of the operational staff.
•Primary reviewer and unit approver of proposal submissions. Responsible for assuring that proposals adhere to College, institutional and sponsor policies and requirements.
•Revises and advises on approved budget changes to awarded grants/contracts.
•Serves as the primary fiscal administrator (FA) for grants and grant activity in the College.
•Provides oversight and coordination of post-award actions, account reconciliation process, cost share management and works in coordination with HR and graduate studies on research-related hiring.
•Manages complex sponsored portfolios of various departmental faculty
•Represents CHS on campus-wide committees addressing sponsored projects issues and works with appropriate units to implement solutions. Serves as primary liaison between College and VCU RA community and as CAR representative.
•Establishes policies and procedures relating to pre-and post-award administration by identifying areas where such polices need to be developed, and working with the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies to integrate these recommendations in to CHS -SPO’s mission.
•Advises upper-level CHS Administration of critical and/or sensitive issues related to the management and administration of sponsored projects, including interpretation of related University policies and sponsor regulations.
•Develops reports for office performance metrics, forecasting and trending of award expenditures and provides relevant ad hoc reporting.
Minimum Hiring Standards
-Minimum of 5 years’ experience, including demonstrated leadership, organization and administrative skills related to pre and/or post-award administration in a complex academic institution.
-Demonstrate effective administrative and technical skills and ability to exercise a wide range of independent judgment and discretion in discharging duties and responsibilities of the position.
-Knowledge of state and federal regulations related to research administration, including Uniform Guidance 2CFR200) and Cost Accounting Standards.
-Demonstrated ability to successfully work with electronic submission portals ( NSF FastLane, Grants.gov, etc.).
-The ability to work well with all levels of employees and external members of the community and to deal effectively with a wide variety of people in person, by phone, and electronically.
-Open and collaborative style that encourages teamwork and cooperation.
-Must have a passion for excellent customer service and commitment to exceptional quality.
-Ability to work well under deadline pressures, exhibiting sound judgment, without sacrificing accuracy or customer service.
-Ability to prioritize work and handle multiple priorities simultaneously.
-Demonstrated ability to solve problems independently using available resources.
-Exceptional verbal/written communication skills.
-Strong organizational skills.
-Bachelor’s Degree or commensurate experience required.
Preferred Hiring Standards
-Ability to successfully work with internal systems (e.g., RAMS - SPOT, Banner, RealSource, ChromeRiver) preferred.
-Advanced degree preferred.
-Certified Research Administrator ( CRA ) and/or CPRA, CFRA preferred.
Required Licenses/ Certifications Anticipated Hiring Range $70,000 to $75,000 Application Process/Additional Information
