The Department of Performing Arts invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position or tenured Associate Professor position based on tenure-transfer into Theatre Education at Emerson College. The Department seeks candidates who can contribute to the excellence and diversity of the academic community through ongoing engagement with students both inside and outside of the classroom in addition to scholarship, creative work, teaching, and service. The appointment begins August 19, 2021.

We encourage applications from candidates who use theatre to expose power relationships and oppressive practices that are normalized in dominant culture and who explore race, gender, sexuality, and class dynamics through their work. Candidates must have demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff from diverse backgrounds. An ability to work and teach collaboratively, and a strong commitment to undergraduate education beyond the classroom are essential. The Department of Performing Arts is home to one of the nation's leading undergraduate programs in theatrical performance, design, stage management, and theatre education with 90 full- and part-time faculty members and staff and 530 students studying in nine distinct undergraduate areas and one graduate area. The department offers BFA degrees in Theatre, Theatre Education, Theatre Design Technology, Stage & Screen Design Technology, Stage & Production Management, Musical Theatre, Acting, Theatre & Performance, and Theatre Education & Performance; general education courses in theatre studies; and MA and MFA degrees in Theatre Education. Emerson Stage, the production organization within the department, produces eight to ten fully staged major productions annually in five theatres, with additional production opportunities available to our students through curricular projects, student theatre organizations and ArtsEmerson, the College's professional presenting company.

Emerson College is the nation's only four-year institution dedicated exclusively to majors in communication and the arts in a liberal arts context. It is located in the dynamic multi-cultural city of Boston in close proximity to major arts institutions, performing art venues, and research centers. The college enrolls 4,446 undergraduate and graduate students from 52 countries and all 50 states.

Qualifications for the Assistant Professor position:
The ideal candidate will hold a terminal degree in Theatre Education or a related field, teaching experience within a diverse college community, and familiarity with current Massachusetts and national curriculum frameworks, theatre standards, and licensure requirements.

Qualifications for the Associate Professor position:
Candidates for the Associate Professor position should hold a terminal degree in Theatre Education or a related field, have evidence of six years of full-time teaching experience within a diverse college community, and have a current appointment at the Associate Professor rank. The candidate should have a recognized body of scholarship that meets or exceeds the expectations for promotion to the Associate Professor rank in the Department of Performing Arts: https://www.emerson.edu/departments/academic-affairs/faculty/promotion-tenure/promotion-tenure-standards/december-2017-6. The candidate should be familiar with current Massachusetts and national curriculum frameworks, theatre standards, and licensure requirements.

Candidates for either rank should have a background and college-level teaching experience in teacher training and several of the following areas: applied theatre and devised work in diverse community environments; urban and multicultural education; drama/theatre arts curriculum design and implementation grounded in diverse traditions, pre K-12; contemporary theories of teaching/learning; authentic assessment; student teacher supervision; and contemporary national and international practices in process drama and drama-in-education.

Candidates should be able to address issues of race and representation in all of their courses. Our ideal candidate will also possess a keen and developed awareness of the issues around diversity, inclusion, and equity within the classroom, and within the teaching profession. The candidate should have facility with culturally responsive teaching pedagogies and approaches, and possess a fluid overall pedagogy that is able to adapt and expand as the cultural conversation around representation, privilege-based difference, and inclusive excellence continues to evolve.

The position includes teaching five courses per year in drama and theatre education from the following options, including courses in education required for Massachusetts licensure of teachers of theatre. Potential courses with an emphasis on equity, inclusion, and social justice include Drama as Education I and II, Contemporary Issues in Education, Student Teaching Practicum and Seminar, Puppetry, Theatre for Young Audiences, Devised Theatre, Theatre of the Oppressed, Theatre and Community, and supervision of MFA Thesis Projects in Theatre Education and Applied Theatre.
In addition to teaching, all faculty members advise and mentor students and participate in the college's system of shared governance. This position includes service to the theatre education program by supervising student teaching practica, assisting with the direction and administration of the undergraduate and graduate programs, participating in curriculum development, and helping to recruit new students.
