    Summary of Position:

    We are seeking an experienced Instructional Designer to help launch an innovative, new, hybrid JD program and to work with administration and faculty to design, develop, produce, evaluate and update engaging online law school courses.

    Description:

    Suffolk University Law School is in the process of launching an innovative new hybrid Juris Doctor program (“HJD”). Students in the HJD program will complete their first year of law school in person and have the option of completing the remainder of their legal education online.

    The Instructional Designer will help to architect the online portion of the HJD program. Initially, the work will be focused on advising the Law School administration on best practices in instructional design and in creating a system for efficiently developing and subsequently improving HJD content across several courses. As individual course development begins, the Instructional Designer will work under the guidance of the Law School administration and with individual professors to help design and deliver engaging online courses as part of the HJD program. As new HJD courses launch, the Instructional Designer will work with administration and faculty to evaluate and improve the offerings.

    The work of the Instructional Designer is anticipated to be fully focused within the Law School for the first 2 to 3 years. The position will also work within Suffolk University’s Center for Teaching & Scholarly Excellence and eventually support other online offerings within Suffolk University. The timeline is subject to change.

    Primary/Principal Responsibilities:

    • Advise the Law School administration on best practices and policies for creating a collection of engaging, interactive, creative online courses for law students
    • Consult with faculty to design, create, and update highly engaging and interactive online learning material and effective assessments in the University’s learning management system
    • Construct learning experiences that promote interaction, social presence, and community among students and between students and faculty
    • Conceptualize and storyboard engaging interactive learning objects and assessments that promote active learning
    • Create supporting material/media (audio, video, simulations, role plays, games, etc.)
    • Conduct quality assurance reviews on courses and use data and feedback to guide course revision and the continual improvement of learning experiences and outcomes
    • Provide one-on-one training and troubleshooting assistance to faculty and staff
    • Troubleshoot problems reported by students in the HJD program
    • Maintain currency in the field of online learning, including best practices and emerging trends in teaching and learning technology, as well as participating in regularly scheduled Center for Teaching & Scholarly Excellence team meetings
    • Conduct instructional research and analysis on learners and contexts
    • Provide support to the Center for Teaching & Scholarly Excellence, and Suffolk University Law School programs other than the HJD program, and other programs within Suffolk University


    *Anticipated percentages of work will shift over time. Initially, the Instructional Designer will provide advice and support on the architecture of the HJD program. As professors teaching in the program are identified, the work will shift to supporting the creation of individual courses. While the initial work will not involve assignments from CTSE, the Instructional Designer may eventually be asked (time permitting) to work on other instructional design projects throughout Suffolk University.



    Requirements/Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree preferred, in instructional design, educational technology, or related field
    • OLC Online Teaching Certification preferred
    • Course Design Institute Certification preferred
    • Familiarity with the pedagogy of legal education preferred
    • Proven experience in instructional design and with instructional technology, preferably with academics in a higher education setting with a range of academic content
    • Excellent knowledge of learning theories, instructional design models, and assessment and evaluation methods
    • Familiarity with building course materials into learning management systems (preferably Blackboard, D2L, and/or Canvas) and utilizing the best online educational tools to promote student learning
    • Experience in Universal Design, design of accessible course materials, and accessible software evaluation, feedback and assessment is required
    • Ability to find and evaluate open educational resources and to use them appropriately
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite 2016, Adobe Creative Suite, Camtasia, Panopto, Adobe Spark, HTML, CSS, XML, Java and JavaScript and other technologies relevant to Instructional Design
    • Visual design skills (Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Illustrator) and ability to storyboard
    • Familiarity with video technology and excellent editing abilities
    • Experience working with simulations, games, and other multimedia content
    • Ability to write effective copy, instructional text, audio scripts/video scripts
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact with stakeholders at all levels, including academic leaders and faculty as well as those who struggle to acquire technological learning/teaching competencies
    • The ability to work with multiple deadlines and multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
    • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality standards and service
