Position Overview:

The Director of Safety and Security will lead the safety, security, crisis and emergency management response to incidents impacting Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM), its students and colleagues. The Director will develop, maintain and review the appropriate security plans and infrastructure, to help ensure an environment where students and colleagues can meet their educational and career goals. The successful candidate will, where appropriate, lead or provide support for investigations of incidents affecting RUSVM community members and will maintain strong relationships with Adtalem and RUSVM leadership, Student leadership and St. Kitts and Nevis law enforcement. The Director will be a key member of RUSVM's Incident Command Team (ICT), supporting quick, strategic and thoughtful responses in times of emergency or crisis. The positon ensures that all matters are handled with a high degree of confidentiality and professionalism, delivering superior service to all RUSVM community members and visitors.

This position will report to the Vice President, Operations at RUSVM. Key internal contacts include the Director of Student Experience, Senior Manager of Campus Project and Operations, Vice President of Enterprise Safety and Security at Adtalem, and other Safety/Security leaders within Adtalem.


  • Responsible for the overall management of the RUSVM Department of Safety and Security to ensure the safety and well-being of members of the RUSVM community, RUSVM property, systems and information.
  • Direct emergency response and crisis management operations to appropriately support the VP, Operations/ Incident Commander in times of crisis and/or emergency.
    Representing RUSVM, build partnerships, liaise and collaborate with the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force, Military and other local and regional security/emergency response agencies as appropriate.
  • Conduct assessments of RUSVM's on and off campus facilities to assess potential security risks and provide recommendations to minimize such risks.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Student Experience and RUSVM Communications to develop awareness and training programs for students and colleagues.
  • Develop and review, as appropriate, key performance indicators, tracking dashboards and reports to be presented to RUSVM leadership including the RUSVM Board of Trustees.
  • Work closely with the Director of Finance to develop and manage capital and operational budgets for the Safety and Security department.
  • Oversee and ensure the continued training and development of RUSVM security officers, including the development of succession plans.
  • Analyze crime trends, patterns and occurrences to determine the appropriate deployment of security resources to help ensure the safety of the RUSVM community.
  • Develop plans and implement security goals, objectives, policies, and work methods in response to assessment of needs. Ensure security plans and policies are up to date, enforced and fit for purpose.
    Lead appropriate After Action Review (AAR) sessions to guarantee adherence to continuous improvement through collaborative information sharing practices.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to Threat Assessment Teams within their assigned patrol zones in order to manage and mitigate risks.
  • Direct training and monitoring of the Crisis Management Strategy and Emergency Response Plan to all campus leadership teams.
  • Oversee and ensure compliance with the Jeanne Clery Act, Campus Save Act and other US and International provisions governing security related campus operations.
  • Ensures the maintenance of the RUSVM Incident Reporting Database.
  • Act as an investigative agent to offer assistance and recommendations to during incidents relating to security and safety concerns, threat assessment, internal theft/fraud and other incidents relating to student, colleague or institution loss.
  • Working closely with the VP, Operations, support the development of business continuity and resiliency plans for RUSVM.
  • Works collaboratively with Adtalem's Vice President, Enterprise Safety and Security, Security Directors and Regional Security colleagues.
  • Participates in relevant committees including the Business Operations Committee, Incident Command and Campus Response Teams.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Master's Degree in Education or Leadership related field.
  • Current teaching or specialty credentials. North American credentials will be an advantage.
  • A minimum of five years of North American middle/elementary school experience or international school experience.
  • A proven record of strong leadership skills, including the ability to communicate clearly to diverse groups and to mentor/lead teams.
  • Ability to plan and implement appropriate educational programs.
  • Ability to analyze data for trends and performance in various programs and to develop strategies for improvement.
  • Ability to facilitate groups to consensus.
  • Ability to supervise implementation of a sound budgeting process.
