Position Information Working Title: Bilingual Academic Coach UW System Title: Instructional Specialist Essential Job Functions This position reports to the Director of The Learning Center (TLC) and works with students one on one and in groups to support their development of skills necessary to direct their learning process and to manage the demands of academic life. While the support of the Academic Coach is available to all students, particular focus will be placed on assisting underrepresented students, including first-generation students, low-income students, students of color, English-language learners, and other students who may face discrimination or other challenges to academic access and success.   This position includes the following responsibilities:  
  • Foster students' development of skills to direct their learning process and manage the demands of academic life through one-on-one sessions, group sessions, and seminars and modalities.
  • Meet with students to assess educational challenges and progress and make referrals to other support services on campus.
  • Assist students to develop appropriate study skills and learning techniques.
  • Act as a resource and support of ELL students.
  • Work to promote inclusivity and equity as crucial components of an excellent University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.
  • Contribute actively as a member of TLC staff, including, for example, attending staff meetings and making presentations about TLC to units, groups, and individuals across campus.
  • Aid with the support of students that the Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs (MESA) office serves from multi-ethnic backgrounds and first-generation college students.
  • Collaborate with Advising to identify and communicate with students in need of academic support.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Student Success and Engagement on curricular and co-curricular initiatives, particularly those focused on access and equity.
  • Collaborate with the Center for Advancement of Teaching and Learning to develop resources for instructors working with different populations of students in multiple modalities.
Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution at time of application
  • Bilingual fluency
  • Two years of experience in a role that promoted student success through academic coaching or tutoring
  • Familiarity with best practices in peer-to-pear learning and collaborative theories and learning models
  • Experience working with underrepresented students
  • Experience teaching and/or supporting students in multiple modalities (e.g., in person, online, hybrid) and the capacity to develop abilities in the various modalities
  • Commitment to student success
  • Demonstrated organizational, technological, and planning experience
  PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's Degree in Education, English as a Second Language (ESL), Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL), or related field or a Master's Degree in an academic field with appropriate educational background
  • Fluency in one or more of the following languages: Hmong, Somali, or Spanish
  • Experience working in a diverse community
  • Education or experience in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM) education
