Job Details

The Department of Engineering at Swarthmore College invites applications for multiple Visiting Assistant Professor one and/or two year positions beginning in the Fall 2021 semester.

Specializations can range across the spectrum of engineering subfields, with particular focus on the areas of Computer and Electrical, as well as Civil and Environmental Engineering. We seek candidates with the ability to teach advanced undergraduates of diverse backgrounds in mid- to upper-level elective courses in the candidate’s area of specialization, for example Fundamentals of Digital and Embedded Systems, Digital Signal Processing, Geotechnical Engineering, or Structural Design.

Swarthmore’s Department of Engineering provides an ABET-accredited general Engineering major, with faculty distributed across the subfields listed above plus Mechanical Engineering and a growing cross-cutting focus on Biomedical Engineering. All courses that count for our major have an attached laboratory component. Like the College at large, we value academic rigor and place a strong emphasis on undergraduate research. The department is housed in a brand-new science building where candidates will be provided laboratory space. Research support is available through both departmental funds and internal College grants.

Located in the suburbs of Philadelphia and near Wilmington DE, Swarthmore College is a highly selective liberal arts college whose mission combines academic rigor with social responsibility. Swarthmore has a strong institutional commitment to diversity, and actively seeks and welcomes applications from candidates with exceptional qualifications, particularly those with demonstrable commitments to a more inclusive society and world. Applicants from traditionally underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply. For more information on Faculty Diversity and Excellence at Swarthmore, see http://www.swarthmore.edu/faculty-diversity-excellence/information-candidates-new-faculty

The successful candidate will have completed their PhD by January 2022. Interest in undergraduate teaching is crucial, and previous teaching/TAing experience is highly valued. Applicants whose teaching or research addresses social, environmental and/or economic impacts of Engineering are appreciated.

Please submit a cover letter, an up-to-date CV, and names, emails, and phone numbers of three references online at apply.interfolio.com/79165. The cover letter should address teaching experience, interest in teaching at a liberal arts college, and preparation to teach undergraduates of diverse backgrounds. Applicants should also outline their research interests and highlight any aspects of their research or teaching that address social, environmental and/or economic impacts of Engineering. We will begin reviewing applications on December 1, 2020 and continue until available positions are filled. Feel free to address any questions to Matt Zucker, Associate Professor and Department Chair (mzucker1@swarthmore.edu).

Swarthmore College actively seeks and welcomes applications from candidates with exceptional qualifications, particularly those with demonstrable commitments to a more inclusive society and world. Swarthmore College is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.
