The Garrison-Foster Health Center is a student health service that provides comprehensive care to the students at Colby. The certified medical assistant will work in an inclusive environment, in close collaboration with the Health Services team, under the supervision of a physician. The successful candidate will provide care to students from diverse backgrounds and identities. This is a temporary position for the 20-21 academic year that is eligible for benefits. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Record patient medical history and vital statistics in medical records
  • Prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations, keeping the rooms neat and clean
  • Interview patients to obtain medical information and measure their vital signs, weight, and height
  • Communicate observed changes in a patient’s condition to the medical staff for assessment
  • Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician
  • Assist with basic diagnostic procedures and perform specimen collection as required
  • Help practitioners perform medical procedures
  • Inventory and maintain medical supplies and equipment including ordering, stocking, cleaning, and trouble shooting
  • Perform administrative or clerical duties as assigned including filing, reception, scheduling, scribing, data entry, prior authorization, and patient registration
  • Attend staff and continuing education meetings at the Garrison-Foster Health Center
  • Perform quality improvement activities as assigned
  • Serve on Health Services committees as appointed by the director of health services
  • Perform additional duties as assigned; duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice


QUALIFICATIONS :

  • A high school diploma or equivalent required
  • Certification as one or more of the following: Medical Assistant (CMA) by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), American Medical Technologists (AMT), National Health Career Association (NHA), National Center for Competency Testing (NVVT); Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) by the National Association for Health Professionals; or registered as a Medical Assistant (RMS) by the American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA) required
  • Highly developed computer skills including experience using Microsoft Office Suite, email and web applications, as well as ability to fully function within an electronic medical record
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to interact with students in a clear, concise, and compassionate manner
  • Attention to detail and accuracy are critical
  • Strong organizational skills with a high level of motivation
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision and as a member of a team, establish priorities, and work collaboratively as a member of a diverse community
  • Capable of excelling in a healthcare environment with many inherent stressors


KEY RELATIONSHIPS :

Reporting to the director of health services, this position interacts with students, staff, and outside constituencies.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :

General health and medical services environment. Position involves frequent movement; some lifting (up to 50 pounds) required. Computer usage involving repetitive hand/wrist motion is necessary. Routine occupational exposure to blood or body fluids. Physical ability to safely wear a respirator; verification of Hepatitis B, MMR, and varicella immunity status due to potential exposure to communicable diseases.
