Reporting to the Executive Director for Advancement, the Director of Development serves as a front-line fundraiser and member of the University’s New York City-based fundraising team. Primary duties include establishing and managing effective relationships on behalf of the University with prospects and existing donors who have the capacity to make a major gift ($100,000-$999,999).

The Director will identify, qualify, cultivate and solicit potential major gift prospects on behalf of the entire University. They will implement successful cultivation and solicitation strategies leveraging partners across campus based on the donor’s interests. The Director is expected to conduct 10-15 prospect meetings per month and will work towards building a portfolio of 80 active major gift prospects. The Director is expected to make gift asks at all levels including soliciting prospects in their portfolio for a minimum annual gift of $2,500 as they build towards a major gift solicitation.
In addition to the incumbent’s role as a University-wide frontline fundraiser, s/he will assist the Executive Director in building a successful fundraising program in the NY Metro region within the context of Syracuse University’s overall fundraising efforts and especially as it relates to Forever Orange Campaign activity in the NYC Metro market.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.

• Competitive candidates will have a minimum of six years of professional experience in the NYC market.

• The successful candidate will have a minimum of 6 year of professional experience in the market.

• Nonprofit background is helpful but we will also consider applicants from fields with excellent transferable skills from working with clients and securing new business deals.

Responsibilities

• Manage an assigned prospect/donor portfolio of approximately 80 alumni, parents, and friends to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and close major gifts for the University with an emphasis on gifts at the $100,000+ level. Conduct all stages of the major gift solicitation process: qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward.

• Develop, implement, and drive fund-raising strategies designed to maximize current giving potential for each individual prospect in the assigned portfolio by creating support and facilitating cooperation throughout the campus community in pursuit of the best strategy for each donor.

• Work collaboratively with College-based and central AEA offices, including Advancement Services, Research & Prospect Systems, Alumni Engagement, Annual Giving, Corporate and Foundation Relations, Principal Gifts, and University Communications. Develop and maintain relationships with faculty, administrators, and staff volunteers associated with specific programs relevant to assigned prospects.

• Report results of all major gifts efforts to the Executive Director: produce meeting calendar, generate development activity reports and system contact reports; maintain comprehensive electronic files in database and on server for engaged alumni, parents, and friends.

• Support prospect engagement and involvement efforts for University-wide events and programs taking place in NY Metro region.
