About the Opportunity:
Operating under the direction of the Chair and Director, the Business and Operations Manager is the lead administrator for the Department of Marine & Environmental Sciences (MES) and the Marine Science Center (MSC).

Responsibilities:
The individual has primary responsibility for all fiscal matters, including management of operating budgets for MES, MSC, the Three Seas Program, and the Bioinformatics Program. Sets and enforces departmental fiscal policies and maintains good internal controls. Provides analytical reports, budget projections, and guidance on the resources available to accomplish departmental objectives. Serves as the department's HR administrator, providing guidance to faculty on HRM policies, hiring mechanisms, and visa requirements. Processes all hires, oversees the annual merit review process, and stays on top of employee end dates to process extensions and terminations. Serves as the I-9 administrator for the Nahant campus. As lead administrator, supervises the activities of the entire MSC/MES administrative staff team, including 7 direct reports. Builds a close-knit team environment among staff of widely varying abilities and responsibilities. Distributes workloads, provides recommendations for role and responsibility changes, as well as possible changes to the administrative org chart. The individual stays apprised of all matters and activities happening at the MSC with constant vigilance for risk management and matters requiring legal guidance. Develops and enforces policies that minimize risk without impeding the flow of operations.

Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree with at least 5 years progressive experience in accounting, business administration, or academic administration; or Master's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or similar, with at least 3 years of administrative, accounting, or business experience. At least 1 year of supervisory experience is required, with a demonstrated ability to bring together a diverse group of people and perspectives. Understanding of generally accepted accounting principles, Uniform Guidance and cost principles as relating to federal research awards, federal labor laws, and Northeastern policies is a must. Must have excellent time management skills, able to balance competing demands and a very heavy workload. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and strong technical skills in administrative and analytical software. Background in a relevant scientific discipline such as biology, environmental science, or ecology desired.
