The Office of Career Services seeks candidates for the position of Associate Director to grow and expand the current internship and employer engagement effort for students. Reporting to the Director of Career Services, the Associate Director will collaborate with the Advancement and Alumni Relations teams to strategically cultivate and strengthen communication with and between employers, students, and alumni for internship and full-time opportunities. This role will be responsible for overseeing a robust, broad-based outreach effort to secure and market internships and entry-level jobs. The Associate Director will oversee the college’s donor funded internship initiatives. This person will oversee internships for academic credit by collaborating with faculty, internship site supervisors and students. Additional responsibilities include implementing related career development programs and promote internships as an integral, valued element of the liberal arts learning experience as well as connect students with specific campus internship resources. In collaboration with and under the supervision of the Director, this professional will work strategically to elevate and enhance the College's internship program.

Employer and Alumni Engagement

  • Collaborate with the Alumni Relations and Advancement team with identifying, contacting and building relationships with alumni in various industries to offer internships and entry-level opportunities to students and recent graduates
  • Oversee/market alumni internship and job postings by sharing with students and relevant faculty.
  • Track alumni to student engagement (i.e. alumni hiring student interns and recent grads, one-on-one mentoring, etc.)
  • Oversee alumni to student engagement on SLC Connect, the college’s online alumni community, with goal of increasing alumni and student interaction for industry specific career advice, networking, and opportunities
  • Partner with Alumni Relations in engaging alumni professionals in on-campus (and virtual) networking programs to enhance greater contact between students and alumni
  • Perform external outreach to national and local organizations, enrich existing relationships and develop new partnerships for potential internship and networking opportunities (phone calls, employer visits, etc.)
  • Host on and off campus (as well as virtual) recruiting programs and events such as fairs, on-campus interviews, resume referral, employer presentations, employer site visits, networking events, etc.

Internship Program

  • Oversee the day to day operation of the internship program, including reviewing and approving employers postings on Handshake, our online database
  • Oversee the academic credit for internships by working with students, professors and the Dean of Studies
  • Support the Internship Practicum Course faulty member by offering guest speaker programming to enrolled students
  • Oversee the stewardship of the college’s donor internship funding for students (including summer funding and the travel stipend)
  • Build relationships with faculty to promote internships to the student body and identify possible candidates for opportunities
  • Ensure the quality of the internship experience for both employer and students
  • Track internship placements for annual report

Career Counseling and other additional responsibilities

  • Provide extensive career counseling/advising to students and recent grads (0-2 years) on a broad range of career-related topics to include: career exploration, resume and cover letter writing, interview preparation and mock interviews, job searching, networking, and using social media in the job/internship search
  • Manage assigned career community and related functions
  • Serve as an advocate for students, the internship program, and Career Services in general
  • Promote general awareness to students, faculty , staff of the internship program and the value of internships
  • As a designated Career Advisor to select FYS classes, partner with dons to offer support and connect students to the professional development resources available through Career Services
  • Conduct data tracking, assessment, and evaluation initiatives

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in career counseling, higher education or related field required.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in career services, preferably in an employer relations role.
  • Energy and enthusiasm for partnership/business development.
  • Proven planning, organizational, programming and presentation abilities.
  • Outstanding writing skills, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively with students, faculty, staff and employers.
  • Ability to travel and work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Experience with databases such as Handshake, PeopleGrove and/or Raiser's Edge or a similar database preferred.
