Chief Research Policy Officer
The California Institute of Technology (Caltech), a world-renowned science and engineering institute, invites nominations and applications for the newly created position of Chief Research Policy Officer. Reporting to the Vice Provost for Research, the Chief Research Policy Officer directs and supervises programs that enable research undertaken by faculty, staff, postdoctoral scholars, and students at Caltech to be conducted in a safe manner, in accordance with the highest standards of integrity, with adherence to strict ethical principles, and in compliance with federal, state, and Institute regulations.
The Chief Research Policy Officer leads a team across four departments: Research Safety, Research Compliance, Office of Laboratory Animal Resources, and Export Control Compliance and works collaboratively with the Vice Provost, the Office of the General Counsel, the Office of Research Administration, and other offices at Caltech to develop, maintain, and implement Caltech’s policies and practices concerning Research Integrity and Research Compliance.
The successful candidate will be an effective communicator who understands both the process of scientific and engineering research and the regulatory framework. They will have demonstrated organizational, supervisory and leadership skills, and independent decision-making ability. They will be skilled in collaborating effectively with researchers, enabling them to pursue their interests while adhering to the state and federal governmental regulations and Institute policies. They will have the ability to work effectively with Institute leadership and maintain close relationships with the Provost’s Office, Division Chairs, Vice Presidents, Office of General Counsel, Division Operations Officers, and government officials and inspectors. A Master’s degree or the equivalent combination of education and experience in a scientific field, and at least 8 years of relevant experience in a scientific, federal-funded organization with prior experience working in a research laboratory is required. In addition, an advanced level of understanding of operational requirements related to the management and implementation of an IRB, IACUC, IBC, SCRO and RSC in a university/advanced research setting, as well as advanced level of knowledge regarding relevant U.S. Federal and State research regulations will be needed.
