General Summary/Purpose:

We are looking for an IT Specialistto program Amazon Alexa voice assist skills. This is an active research environment with quick developments. The candidate will have an opportunity to learn how to use technology solutions in public health research. The immediate task is Covid-19 related. You may have to provide quality coding solutions in Python or Java. The ideal candidate is high school graduate who will have a passion for technology and software building for research studies and looking to develop some research experience prior to starting college. Attention to detail excellent communication and organizational skills, the ability to work remotely when necessary, and an analytical mind are essential qualities for a successful candidate. The position is housed in the Department of Epidemiology with access to a wide range of world-leading researchers and projects, including those at the G.W. Comstock Center such as the ARIC study.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Active collaboration with investigators to program and design a user friendly system. As the system evolves so will the tasks and needs of the team.

  • Collaborate with the PI in the technology development solutions
  • Formulate program specifications and basic prototypes
  • Transform software designs and specifications into high functioning code in the appropriate language
  • Integrate individual software solutions with Amazon Alexa
  • Ensure privacy and protections for users.
  • Test code periodically to ensure it produces the desirable results and perform debugging when necessary
  • Perform upgrades to make software and systems more secure and efficient
  • Collaborate with the PI to create documentation for user support

Other duties as assigned including collaboration on other active research projects

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma/GED, 2 years related experience. Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

  • Programming with relational databases such as SQL.
  • Programming Intent, Response, Utterances voice design components
  • Amazon voice skills requirements and certification process
  • Detail-oriented and excellent problem solving skills
  • An analytical mindset and critical thinking
  • Demonstrable ability to discover and fix errors in code
  • JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    Preferred 1 or more years of experience (high school or college courses are acceptable) with programming (JAVA, Stata, Python, R, etc.).

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
