General Summary/Purpose

The Research Technologist position isavailable immediately to participate in clinical and basic research studies on SARS-CoV2 and influenza viruses. This position will involve performing serological assays with instruction and laboratory protocols. This person will be responsible for assisting with viral antigen isolation and characterization, acquisition of human samples, and processing of samples using standard serological assays, including but not limited to ELISAs and microneutralization assays. The Research Technologist will assist in organizing laboratory protocols as well as prepare, test, and maintain standard laboratory equipment. Training other users in common equipment operations and routine lab procedures may be required.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

This person will be asked to perform and document experiments, coordinate laboratory shifts equipment schedules in the context of social distancing, organize laboratory working areas and supplies, order laboratory supplies; and provide routine maintenance of equipment.

Minimum Qualifications(Required)

Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field.

Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

Some post-undergraduate lab experience, including basic wet lab skills, e.g., PCR, ELISA-based assays, and cell culture, are preferred but not necessary.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Working knowledge of basic molecular biology techniques.

Experience with immunology and serology assays; experience with handling viruses.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
