Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Maternal and Infant Mortality Unit Supervisor in the Bureau of Community Health Promotion, Division of Public Health, Wisconsin Department of Health Services, this position reviews and abstracts information from death certificates, medical and hospitalizations records, autopsies and social service records to create case materials for review by the Wisconsin Maternal Mortality Review (MMR) Team. The abstractor is responsible for writing case narratives, and providing additional information on each case based on clinical documentation in the records. The abstractor will typically attend review committee meetings. The abstractor will be a member of the MMR internal team and will meet monthly with MCH Epidemiologist, all abstractors, BCHP CMO, and others as needed.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

Bachelor's degree required. Degree in nursing is preferred.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Preferred Characteristics:
1. Knowledge of 1) Wisconsin's public health system and private health care systems, 2) maternal and child health, and 3) maternal mortality surveillance and review.
2. Clinical or public health nursing experience is preferred, ideally in obstetrics, antenatal, and postpartum care
3. Demonstrates understanding of normal/abnormal processes of pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum and the wide spectrum of factors that can influence maternal outcomes
4. Attention to detail.
5. Ability to serve as an objective, unbiased observer, documenting and communicating the facts of each case
6. Demonstrates understanding of social and structural determinants contributing to maternal mortality.
7. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide variety of agencies and personnel, including other state, local, and federal agencies, researchers, stakeholders, and the public. Knowledge of HIPAA and confidentiality laws.
8. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
9. Ability to work independently and effectively under general supervision.
10. Advanced knowledge and skill in the use of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other software.
11. Data entry experience and ability to navigate a variety of electronic medical records systems.
12. Ability to work concurrently on multiple cases at a time.

License or Certificate:

Licensed Registered Nurse preferred
