Bard College is seeking an Associate Director of Human Resources. The Associate Director will develop, implement, and coordinate policies, programs, and procedures in support of employment, orientation, and leaves of absence (STD, LTD, FMLA, WC, etc.) The Associate Director is also responsible for ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations, as well as contract and policy provisions. Works closely with the Director of Human Resources in the delivery of services and makes recommendations as appropriate.

This is a full-time, exempt, 12 month per year position reporting to the Director of Human Resources. The successful candidate will excel at working in a community that is broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual orientation and religion.

Bard College’s main campus is in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY with 1900 undergraduate students; the campus also features multiple graduate programs. The 1000 acre campus sits along the Hudson River and offers the Fisher Performing Arts Center, the Hessel Museum of Art, as well as the home of the Bard Prison Initiative, the largest college degree granting prison education program in the U.S. The Bard Network also includes several Bard High School Early Colleges across the country as well as five international campuses and partnerships. The Bard Network is complex and demonstrates Bard’s priorities well in addition to the College’s emphasis on civic engagement.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Directs daily operations of the Office of Human Resources in the absence of the Director; ensures timely and appropriate resolution of employee inquiries or issues.
  • Works closely with the Director of Human Resources to develop and implement department operational objectives, policies and procedures; formulate and implement recommendations for the continuous improvement of the department.
  • Analyzes existing services and procedures and recommends, implements, documents, and communicates improvements or modifications.
  • Develops and delivers training programs and workshops.
  • Conducts internal investigations and recommended plans of correction.
  • Handles employee counseling and disciplinary actions, as needed.
  • Helps develop the college wide annual evaluation process in coordination with the Director and VP for Administration.
  • Serves as the primary point of contact for union groups on campus for labor relations.
  • Prepares reports and campus communications, as needed.
  • Other duties, projects, and committee/task force participation as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, Labor Relations, or related field.
  • At least five years of Human Resources experience in a fast paced environment with competing demands.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications; strong relationship building, problem solving, and multi-tasking skills.
  • Minimum of three years of direct supervisory experience.
  • Experience with collective bargaining and working with union employees.
  • Experience using MS Office Suite and an ERP database system (preferably Ellucian Colleague) with a general adaptability to new technology solutions.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master’s degree in Human Resources, Labor Relations, or related business discipline.
  • Collective bargaining experience in a college, government, or similar environment.
  • Higher Education experience.
  • SHRM certification.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion and social justice.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods of time and work in a standard office environment.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift 20 pounds.
  • Must be able to work occasional weekends and evenings as needed.
