Position Description

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies at the University of Washington invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position of Assistant Professor and Heritage Language Program Director. This position has an anticipated start date of Autumn 2021 and will have a 9-month service period. We seek to hire an Applied Linguist with a research focus on Spanish as a heritage language and its learners and/or speakers to direct our well-established and growing Spanish heritage language program.

University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. The successful applicant will serve as Heritage Language Program Director with overall responsibility for curricular, administrative, and staffing requirements in the Spanish heritage language program. Teaching duties may include Spanish heritage language courses, undergraduate-level courses in Spanish linguistics, and graduate-level courses in the applicant’s area of research specialization. Other professional duties include maintaining an active research program and providing service to the Department and University.

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies comprises a diverse community of faculty, staff, and students.  The successful candidate will be expected to complement the research and teaching of our faculty, both in the Department and the University as a whole, and to carry out the Department's commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in Applied Linguistics or in a related field, with an emphasis in Spanish as a heritage language and its learners and/or speakers, by the date of the appointment.  Native or near-native proficiency in Spanish and English are required.

  6. Diversity statement (statement describing how your scholarship, teaching, and/or service contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion, no more than 500 words)
  7. Three letters of recommendation
